With only $2000… I started traveling full time!!

Published by Darron Toy on

whenever anyone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up my answer was a bum that travels all around the world making enough money to live and die by the next plane ticket hey guys my name is Sheila and I make these videos every Wednesday this Wednesday I want to start with the videos that you guys have been sending I asked you to make videos to play the beginning and and and you did and I love them so here they are what is up guys Zach coming at you from Nova Scotia Canada and you're watching Shailja on living on a la way what's up guys is Barry you're watching livin on a one-way like subscribe so stoked that you guys are excited to make videos and I can include them in mind what I wanted to talk to you about this week a channel has been growing and I wanted to introduce myself or reintroduce myself if you've been here since the Appalachian days or bookish a time in my van in California where I'll be probably for the rest of the years whenever anyone asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up my answer was a bum that travels all around the world making enough money to live and die by the next plane ticket so maybe that's not your dream figure out what it is that will make you truly happy and then figure out how to make that happen a lot of people ask how I got started how did you start in this it kind of fell into my hands I'm from Minnesota I worked at this restaurant since I was 15 16 years old then I went off to college got my college degree in San Diego and then I moved to North Carolina I was a nanny in Spain I moved to Hawaii and then I moved back home and I did what any person who just got their degree does and then moves back home I went back to my high school job that I had before college but I didn't need a degree for it but this time I was equipped with a psychology degree I knew how to upsell better I know how to ask questions like what do you feel like you would like to eat so but seriously working at a restaurant is a really good way for travelers to weeks to Peru then two weeks to Thailand and go travel all over and so I thought it would be no problem if I was like hey Amin only for three months I'll be back they were like no we can't just hold a job for three months okay well since I'm not since that they're not holding my job for me I guess I should go find another one that's literally how it started and then the more you travel the more people you meet and I was in Italy and I told my friend we were in Venice and then we were on the vaporetto other water taxis and I was like watch this I'm gonna talk to this cute boy so the windows were open or the door was open or something and I was like excuse me could you just shut the doors and he looked up at me he shut the door and he looked back down I was like excuse me what can we do here tonight can we go out could we do and we ended up going out with him at night they showed us all the local drinks and they invited us to their house there's 15 people at their house from all over the place they were college kids we were college kids it was so much fun but one of the people at their house was from Ecuador so then the next year I went to Ecuador contacted her her and her brother came and picked me my friend up in Quito Ecuador from the hotel and took us out these things they don't happen when you're sitting on the couch you have to get out there and go do it okay cool you started good for you now how do you maintain it I was just listening to a podcast with nomadic Matt nomadic matcom he writes travel blogs he says you need about $1,500 a month to travel full-time and I agree with him you can live cheaper a lot of other places I've worked in the surf camp in Costa Rica as the yoga instructor I worked in Alaska for actual money now I have an online job where I can log into anywhere in the world I'm super super frugal so even when I have money and have money to blow I still in suit when we were Whistler there was a sweatshirt that I tried out only and this isn't I like this sweatshirt it took me I'm not exaggerating 30 to 40 minutes to make this decision of if I should buy this sweatshirt do I need the switcher $50 do I love this sweatshirt how long have I had this such a that I'm wearing now probably five years money is Edmund flow so in five years that $50 just gonna seem like nothing $50 is five nights in a hostel or half a night in a hotel or it's a lot of things the sheriff is look at me which is weird these are the benefits of not having a home you get to do your videos in parking lots and people look at you we're good you also need to be resourceful so when I was in Hawaii I broke up with my boyfriend it was his car we were sitting with his friends and I worked 45 minutes away so I decided I'm just gonna back a sleepover bag I'm gonna go to work my new job my brand-new job and I'm just gonna see if I can like stay at someone's head also Network I was like do you live nearby like to the friends that I was making at work like kinda I was like like walkable well yo you could walk well I just with my boyfriend and I like 45 minutes away and I'm kind of just trying to find somewhere cuz I work tomorrow and the next day too I made fast friends that week I was like best friends all the people still friends and some of those people today if you're watching this channel yes I travel full time but I'm not always traveling sometimes I'm at home in Minnesota and me and my sister makes some real thing good vlog so you need to check those out there's a breast pumping one gets a little crazy now that you kind of know how things have been going I want to tell you the future plan mmm future plans change time so I hesitate to even tell you you can see how they change maybe that might be fun but for now for now I'm in the van until the end of the year I'm going home for Thanksgiving I'm going to go for Christmas so you'll get to see amber and Bennett sprinkled in there a little bit and then Seth and I are headed to New Zealand at the end of January beginning of February for two to three months and then we're gonna go to Hawaii come back to the van and cruise around that's as far as got plans but we're also looking at new content creation though if you're an apparel company or you know somebody who's an apparel company outdoor gear something that would work in New Zealand in the van I'm gonna take pictures of your really cool water bottle in epic places in New Zealand and you get to use it for your social media that's what contact creation is let me know send me an email contact a living in on one way but I just wanted to say hi to everybody that's new to the channel if you're new to the channel I want you to comment below with what your favourite video has been so far I would like to know what you guys like to watch and make these videos for you if you're not new to the channel been here since Yogesh a days or the Appalachian Trail days thank you so much for continuing to watch the share it with anybody that you think might like it share it with a friend share the company that you like share it with your mom your husband your kids I'm gonna close with more videos that you have sent and I will see you guys all next week hi everybody I'm John from Illinois and shayla makes these videos for us every Wednesday and free from Denver Colorado and Shayla makes these videos every Wednesday we buy e

HopeWorld · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

I love travelling but I'm not very extroverted so I don't make too many connections which sucks lol

Lexi Byrne · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

Gen Mel · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

Do you have student loans? That’s my biggest issues in life and gets in the way of my traveling 🙁

The Impatient Empath · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

I think you are amazing! I am from MN too! Recently lost my job, and am seriously considering traveling full time! Thank you for your videos!

The Chaos Crew · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

I am so glad you have been living your dream, but GIRL. You are lucky you haven't been murdered yet. You need to be careful. Maybe I just listen to too many true crime podcasts but stories like this end badly so often.

GiDeanLeigh Helck · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

I just realized you look like Blake Lively, can you be any more awesome?

Jasmine Major · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

Because I would travel and go back to Philadelphia, work and travel again. Now I am seriously considering getting a job here in Lebanon and go back to Barcelona from here. I love your channel 😍😍😍

Jannah Bowen · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

I thought I was new to your channel until I realized I watched a video about safe solo traveling a year ago! I'm in college now, and I tell people that I want to live in a van after I get a degree haha

Lindsay Whiddon · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

Were you an au pair in Spain?

Blackout's Box · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

I think just today I watched six of your videos kkkkkk I’m going to backpack alone for 4 months in Europe, I’m from Brazil, but I was an au pair in the US, and did a exchange in Canada, but backpacking will be my first time! Loved your tips! And you are a inspiration!!!! Thank you!

lizzabbott · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

I’m new here today ! This is my 4th video of yours. I’ve done some traveling in the past ( India, Hawaii, Alaska, England, places in the mainland States), but only closer “to tos” recently ( Toronto, Ithaca, NYC, DC). You’re inspired by me to renew my Passport ! Yay ! Cheers from Buffalo, NY ! Liz

Out of Office · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

I'm loving your videos, as you can tell hahahaha I'm commenting on all of them 😂Are you working like a freelancer them? I didnt quite understand from the video (:

Brittany Kelly · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

How long did you live in Hawaii for? I'm 31 – living and working in seattle in tech – and seriously considering an entire life change.

Bruce Wayne · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

I like white girls they are so cute and innocent

The Path Less Traveled · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

So sad that I only found your channel after you left NZ!! Ive been living here for the last 3 years and it would have been cool to show you around. But it looks like you guys had an awesome time. Keep up the awesome vlogs!

Nakyiah Gerrard · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

Spring Ranch · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

Love, no. LOVE (that is better) your practical, semi goofy, super enthusiastic take on travel and life.

Marie Poppins · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

I really really like you. Keep doing what you love.

Scott Asbach · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

Wait whaaaaaatttt? I'm a fellow Gopher alum (from Moorhead, MN) and now live it up in OB, San Diego. Definitely just stumbled across your travel videos by random chance too! So wild. Your vlogs are the best – keep up the awesome work! 👍

Sledneck · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

I'm new today, probably 5th or 6th video of yours I have watched. Love them all so far. I work temporary seasonal jobs mostly around YNP, so I know the gypsy lifestyle, but I do find housing since seasons last a few months. I go home sometimes too, gotta check in with Mom and Pops once in awhile. Ever heard of the Forrest Fenn treasure hunt? I got into it less than a year ago and I love it! Could make some good content for ya, take your bear spray! Lol

MRo · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

I am so new I have seen only two and so I can not decide which was my favorite…who knew?

cgtlv · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

You talk so fast and have a lot of blips in the video. It is hard to listen to what you have to say. I did subscribe but it is hard to follow your thoughts.

Riley Savannah · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

My favorite is the solo traveler video !! Such useful tips !

Meghan Bringleson · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

When people ask me what I want to do when I'm older I say the same thing. To just be a travel bum and explore but make money at the same time. It is so cool to watch someone live that dream too. Show that it's possible and it doesn't always have to be a dream, it can be reality:)

westredg · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

DAAANG! when you explained about the sweatshirt that's like exactly me😂

Brianna Ritchie · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

You’re so real and you make this lifestyle look attainable. Thank you so much for the inspiration

Nate d90 · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

Stumbled into this channel. You live that hippy-dippy, nomadic, lifestyle, but you're self-aware enough to understand how basic that lifestyle can come off. You are my "vibe". In love with your content!

Rose Hauer · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

Where/did you get your yoga certification?

Gali Hazan · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

Hey!! I love your videos so much they inspire me daily😆 Just wondering: how do you find temporary jobs while traveling (specifically how do you find ones where the employer is cool with you working for like 2 weeks only)? Please make a video if you have tips i’m SO curious!!

Saige Flickinger · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

How did you pay for school before or while traveling?

Carolina Mendigaña · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

Hi Shayla, I’m not sure you’ll see my comment but I just wanted to say I’m obsessed with your videos I found your channel like 3 hours ago and I haven’t stop watching!!!! You’re Amazing

Lucre Bello · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

What the heck there's not a time when I watch your videos where you don't remind me of Emma Stone, not only physically but also with most of your looks and gestures

Carlos Fernando · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

What's your online job?

Kevin Looney · July 30, 2019 at 3:26 pm

Cool Videos. Have you considered using Patreon as a source of income?
