Walking Through Athens & Talking About Greece

Published by Darron Toy on

that is the Acropolis the hill there with the Parthenon on top right there the most iconic building of Greece and representing classical ancient Greece completed in 438 BC and some ancient Greek ruins here I'm going to stop Athens here give a taste for the city I just arrived late last night and I've been walking around doing some shopping I bought swim goggles before the Greek islands and swimming and use sandals classic Greek leather sandals and I also got a ferry ticket for tomorrow afternoon arriving at 3:40 in the morning that's gonna be kind of a pain I'll explain what's gonna happen with that in a couple of minutes so I'm going to get over to Rocky Square more ancient Greek ruins here and for those who are wondering about the bicycle situation if you remember two years ago when I was in Greece the last time or not the last time I've been to Greece twice since then this is my sixth time and to Greece but two years ago and I was here for six weeks on a mountain biking adventure around the Greek islands went to six different islands and I bought a mountain bike right near monastiraki square here before I left for 60 euros from like a thrift store shop area but it was out on the street so a great deal for an awesome bike perfect mountain bike with multiple gears I think it was like 18 gears and back on the bicycle here so a great deal use it it was awesome other than one flat tire on Santorini and then I got back from that trip back to Athens you gotta watch out for these guys with the bracelets because they will say that they're putting it on your wrist for free and just kind of put it on your wrist and then of course it's not free and they want some money and so I got back to Athens with the bicycle and wanted to sell it try to get my money back and so I stood here in monastiraki square right up ahead here on a hot hot afternoon trying to sell it had a sign bicycle for sale and I just had no luck stood here right over here for like a couple of hours and was like starting to feel like I was getting heatstroke and finally just gave up and was like okay not gonna happen and so this is monastiraki a classic old I guess Orthodox Church and again the Parthenon up there and so it was right over here on this wooden structure that I was sitting trying to sell the bike and finally gave up and decided to go get a cold beer down there is where a buckle fight get across here down there is some various thrift stores so if you're looking for a bicycle in Athens then try down there there was different places that had bikes most of which were pretty crappy but I lucked out and found that perfect one and so I was unable to sell the bike and I was just thinking well I was flying out the next day too I think Amsterdam Netherlands and so I was just gonna leave it like I had no other choice really that I could think of and so I went with a bike down here and found a spot to get a beer actually it might have been a block over because it was a little bit quieter like walking Street and so I take a seat at this little bar with a streetside table area all right well I'm going to walk back in there anyways it's very interesting definitely a bit gritty and so I get to this little bar take a seat I put my bicycle against like a sign saying like that without locking it up and I guess the lady the waitress fair notice that I didn't lock the bike and so she commented and said aren't you even I've lock up your bike there and I said no because I don't even care if it gets stolen at this point I'm just gonna leave it cuz I'm leaving and I don't have anything else to do with it alright I'm getting to some neighborhoods that I showed in my last video of Athens there's a really cool graffiti right over here or a street art I should say that was for another video and so it might have been up here hello and then I will get off these streets that I showed in that other video and show some other parts of that then this is gonna be a long line I'm gonna walk all the way to Syntagma square so pretty cool lanes here with some nice little restaurants despite all the graffiti some of which is nice and colorful and add some character and some of which is just messing things up and so I don't remember now which place that was a feel like I would recognize it if I saw it this could have been it and so I emailed her this is it definitely because I went down those spiral stairs to the bathroom but I emailed the woman she gave me so I so I have to tell the story so the woman asked me why I didn't lock up the bike and I said I don't care if it get stolen and she then says well or maybe it was a few minutes later or something she comes back and says well if you want I'll store the bike for you and you can just come back whenever and pick it up and it'll just be my storage space I have like the spare room and it's just gonna hang out there and not be in my way and so I said sure what the heck I have no other options at least maybe it will be there when I come back and so she gave me her email address two email addresses and I knew the place the restaurant okay I'm going to walk it back down this way so she gave me her email addresses and I emailed her last week and said I'm coming into Athens do you still have the bike and I did not hear back from her I was just looking there was a woman in there that could have been her I'm not sure I dunno know her name but I'm filming this video right there so I guess it was right here that I just like put my bike against that thing all right head up this way and so no word back from her and that was like five days ago now the thing is I'm not sure that actually even walk the bike for this trip man just besieged I guess that right there is Athena that's my guess who of course Athens is a named after unless that could be Helen I don't know but it is a iconic image that you see I think up at the Parthenon there is also that statue maybe like the original statue like that and it is definitely one of the Greek goddesses or else Helen Helen of Troy I watch TV series Helen of Troy or I think it was just called Troy a recent one at my mom's house because she had the DVDs or she had it streaming on Netflix and so we watched the entire series if you get the chance check it out Troy it's really intense and one of the if not the saddest story you will ever see I won't give it away obviously you know there's the Trojan horse and all that but it is a multi-part series showing a lot of the full story based on the Iliad and the Odyssey by Homer anyways so I'm not sure that I'm even going to want that bicycle even if she had it because the island I'm going to tomorrow is extremely hilly now I'm not gonna mention the island just to kind of leave it a surprise where I'm going tomorrow afternoon Greek flag the island I'm going to tomorrow I've been to before and some of my very first videos are from there it is New York Santorini but not Santorini I probably won't go to Santorini this time because I've been there I think three times before it is a small very pleasant little island with one village all right so the mission right now is to find the main shopping street that leads up to Syntagma square which I was just at this is all the center of Athens the shopping area it is a Saturday afternoon so that is why a lot of these businesses are closed up right now but I bought my sandals just a few blocks away from here and the really important thing was the swim goggles all right a classic Church here and I think I walked past this one earlier trying to get oriented here and so finding those swim goggles was crucial because who knows if I'll be able to find them out on the islands and I wasn't planning to film this video today and then we always said I'd better do it now because of the slow internet at my hotel if I waited till tomorrow I could have recorded a video tomorrow because my Faria doesn't leave until 5:30 in the evening but due to this slow internet I wouldn't get it uploaded tomorrow and I don't think I have internet at the place that I'm staying on the island that I am going to tomorrow and so there should be internet on the island ice I'm pretty sure yeah I mean there was the last time I was there in 2009 so but it didn't say Wi-Fi available when I moved the room and so who knows when I will be able to get another video uploaded because even if it is available at restaurants which it should be I'll find internet somewhere if it's slow internet and is going to take 6 8 10 12 20 hours to upload then I'm not going to get a video uploaded sitting around at a restaurant Greece has some of the worst internet in the world only Cyprus is even worse that I found in Cyprus once it took four days to upload a video four full days of leaving the computer just you know sitting there going 24 hours a day waiting for that video to upload and on some of the Greek islands I've had similar like 2 or 3 days waiting for a video to post oh man now this church looks familiar as well but I think I might be where I want to be and so this way I'll finish this video and get it starting uploading tonight that should be able to get it done and then get it posted and then it might be a while until my next video also because I am planning to finally okay this is not the chirps that I was thinking of okay which way'd I mean you know I checked my phone but I'm filming and I don't want to try to pull out my phone ask somebody yes Syntagma you know Syntagma square straight up here thank you thank you very much so I said to them yes us which is hello Greek you can also say Yasu which is kind of the more informal hello it's kind of more like hey I guess all right up here and to the left so where did that shopping street go I wanted to at least give a taste it's like that you know full-on tour a sensual area but just give a taste of kind of the busy happening scene there but if I get to Syntagma square then from there I will find that area so getting to that island tomorrow I have a room booked for four nights in the one little village and then after that then I'm planning to go on this adventure to this other little island that I've heard about never been to it it's going to involve going to Crete which is one of the biggest islands in Greece and I don't think I'm gonna want to try to bike around that Island anyways I'll probably hitchhike or catch a bus or something and so between being on the super hilly island I'm going to tomorrow and then Crete then I might not want the bicycle anyways so that's better wrapping up that story maybe on my way back I'll check in with her again and I'd love to mail that bicycle back to the US actually I really like it and at this point if all I pay if I you know can actually get it from her and all I pay is the shipping cost then it's a cheap mountain bike all right where are we oh man okay Stadio street this is one that I was on before syntagma up this way okay thank you all right I got a little off-track there okay I recognize this guy on the right so I'm near by but the swimming goggles actually was right around here somewhere and me ferry ticket they're just like five minutes ten minutes walk or so all right I'm close to Syntagma her and that is where I stayed when I was in Athens back in that was like February or March so it was quite cool it is hot now it is like quite pleasant but you get out in the Sun and it is very hot okay think I'll get there from here oh yeah this is turning into a really long video and so I got the ferry ticket however the timing as I said is weird because I have tomorrow night at the hotel Brice stayed last night and will be tonight I'd reserved three nights there and so I was hoping to take a ferry on Monday day after tomorrow and there were no fairies going to that Islands on Monday I wasn't sure I knew that it was a bit of a crapshoot as to whether that would work and so the only one was 5:30 in the evening tomorrow arriving at 3:40 in the morning okay I think that is st. agnus Square I'll get up there and then I'll at least know where I am and so I arrived at 3:40 in the morning and so I was thinking that I could reserve another night at that place that I'm staying for tomorrow night and so that I'm paying twice for a room but then I remembered first of all I don't know if there will be a room available last minute but also I remembered when I stated this aisle in the last time I camped there and I have a tent this time because that is the objective for this okay finally that is the objective for this trip is to do a camping adventure and stay in some rooms like I am the first few nights on this island and then after that maybe I'll start camping or maybe I'll stay another few nights there not sure but but I have my tent and camping mattress and so the beach that I stayed at on this island the last time in 2009 was and here is the shopping central found it Syntagma square and you can see this just goes and goes this way and so I remembered that the place that I can't that last time is a short walk from the port where the ferry drops you off and so rather than try to book a room and then how do I even get up to the village which is different from where the port is at 4:00 in the morning then I think I'm just going to walk over to that beach hope it's still all like you know works out I can still camp there probably be fine anyways I have a tent and I will find a place to set it up and sleep for the night and then the next day get to the rooms and be inside so that is the general plan and situation for my Greek journey here and so I'll mention a few more words of Greek I've learned a bit not even vaguely conversational but just a few random words in the course of my different trips coming here so hello I said is yeah sauce or Yasu and then you can just say yaw sauce back thank you is a fartist Oh or you can say a father still pulley thank you very much and the response to thank you is radical Oh and so that's like you're welcome but it is kind of a multi-use word that can also kind of mean excuse me like if someone's in your way you can say pas de colo and then I forget I used to be able to count to ten I can count to four and a vo three da da I forget after that and then excuse me is signal me okay is inductee for some strange reason I can say the word napkin it's hard to open septa and so that is the church that I thought the other church was so I'll finish this video down there all right

"They should call some of those blocks… the graffiti killers".

"Another way of saying it = it is easy to spot a clean person out in a crowd… people usually follow them; and, if they make it to an older age (for whatever / combination (s) of reasons… those leverages, not only have they been paid (but, usually by the other people tagging along, hiding behind those my clean / maybe someone else's dirty walls); and, this comment is easy to see – and, the instigation… looked like it worked fine (and, this could go on forever, but won't)… this is when I throw in the towel and may wash it (but, that is my information and… I like it – but, in all honesty – other people should like it more) and, that's good, but – my vision is pretty good as well; and, I hate liars… so, let me not be one – and, I know I had help here, but… thank you, thank you very much"!

"The idea here would be: What people cannot see… could hurt them; however, that fear… requires a lot of work; the, work needing to be done -> if it looks bad on the outside = why would I want to go in"?

Avoidance Technologies · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

"People that abuse – make me mad; because there is no helping them, and or most likely (in almost all cases) -> the people they abuse as well – the fact of the matter is it should be that 100% fail of relations, needing help = no way too; any rationalization of… anything the abuser says… society has already compounded the interest with… in the form of -> prisons, institutionalizations, hand-guns, bombs, domestic abuse, slaveries, murder / rapes, always fighting, and… now, help us out again"…. hmmm

Avoidance Technologies · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

"If people just the time to think a little more for themselves; the end result (with wisdom, of course) should equal, an easy answer / possibly less easy result; and, that would be – people, especially young people – should not be enslaved and or imprisoned in this world; this, addiction society has with suffering (especially unnecessary suffering / suffrages – whether it be recycled and or not / behaviorally driven); the bottom line is… enough is enough and… if and when people don't know better – they will have to be saved by someone else, I guess; however, that leverage of knowing that much – is the untruth and history of the matter / thus, unfair, unjustified, over-populated and irresponsible; the, pointing of any fingers, if there are any to be had… is probably (from, the ones laying down prey work rather than the healthy prayers that could be answered if… they were found); this, necessity is an interesting one – I guess could plague the world with debt; but, those dividends and investments (if one would call it – in reference to the behavior associated, needing rescued relationships – sound felonious at best, and that insight is… for, the lies that are not theirs, the misunderstood, and -> possibly and the wanted and needed saving Grace, of… other peoples unknown); I mean hey look – some people get it, some don't – the many that don't = DON'T KNOW THAT THEY ARE GETTING IT;  this paradigm is the interesting one, that – believe it or not… "THEY MISS"; some of those misses are dire, and in desperate need; however, some of that unwanted and recycled behavior associated with – the desperate and recycled, (I will make sure this is right scenario's – don't carry the healthy weight of past becoming's), to a.. smarter and more wise situation and final outcome of… the less to enable -> those type of situations and recycles in the first place = as, hard as it may be… it would serve to be (in any long and or short term relationships)… HEATLTHIER".

Yaser Zilla · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Athens looks awful

Limp business · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Just beautiful. Love the Greeks… (PS: Grafitti is not a problem, it's art)

Debashis Ghosh · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

You stretched the bike story for more than half the video. Dude its a good video but you are so distracted between filming, walking around the place and narrating …..

pianokeyjoe · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Funny, I LOVE Greeks and the music, and movies from Greece but I never saw Athens until now! It looks like a major metropolitan city in Puerto Rico, where I am from, called Rio Piedras,Hato Rey! The architecture looks simple and elegant like in Puerto Rico! The Old Greek electrical Sockets I liked to collect so I would be visiting alot of baazar markets looking for those things. Again, the music…oh oh ohh! the Greek pop music!

DmY808 · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Athens is what happens when you overspend and nobody wants to work or pay taxes. You get a place that if not for other nations bailing them out would of imploded. They probably still will implode within 10-20 years. Tourists and German money is the only thing keeping Greece afloat.

Di Di · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Wow! when I was in Athens in 1976 there was no graffiti anywhere. Too bad because Athens Greece is a beautiful country, hopefully they can clean it up to way it used to be back in the day…I'm enjoying all your Greece videos, haven't been there in 43 years!

luuchoo G · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Greece may be a beautiful country but Athens is so painfully ugly. It really is among the ugliest European capitals, no doubt. Its such a shame that a city with so many historic sites looks so run down

Carlos Rod · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Too much grafitti… government must do something…why dont they have an art district for grafitti…what a shame so much beauty and history…ruining this once great city.

thanks

Living Walks · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Hi there, we've been enjoying watching this. We film natural 4k walks in
cities, and have just filmed Athens, so it's especially interesting to
see your viewpoint, thank you for taking the time to add it. Look
forward to seeing more from you, we always enjoy your tours.

Bob Fotoples · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Nice tour. I recognized many things from our trip in May 2018. I remember doing a lot of walking. One thing that I'm surprised about is the number of people wearing shorts. I think mostly tourists wear shorts. Most Greeks wore jeans, or slacks. Of course, it is Sept. which is very warm.

tigra1 · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Your content is great!
It could have been better though if you could include the exact time interval of your travels written somewhere.

TheGreekGeeks · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

I guess they thought that the bike was stolen that's why nobody was interested in buying it.. It's a common thing in Greece… 😕

Paul Allan · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Good video if you can endure the long, boring, rambling story about his bike.

Jason Peter Sharpe · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

P Martin · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Man, open a spray paint store there and you'll be rich! Graffiti everywhere.

Addson Zhang · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Why are the buildings not so European?

Addson Zhang · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm

The writings and the drawings on the walls are not nice.

The Warman's · May 14, 2019 at 4:28 pm
