Utah at 15 MPH – Family Bike Tours – Utah Office of Tourism

Published by Darron Toy on

You know, your perception is largely dependent
on how you’re getting around. Whether it’s on a train or a bike or a car. And it totally changes how you perceive the
landscape around you. My name’s Tim Sullivan, my wife Erin, My daughter
Juliet and my son Teague. So I had written a book called Ways to the West about traveling around the west without a car. Via bicycle, bus boat, train. I’m a transportation planner so I’m always
thinking about transportation in cities and developed the idea to do a family adventure
cycling story. One of three bicycle routes that’s been completed
in the West goes through Utah from east to west So we thought it would be interesting to do
samples of that route. My wife Erin, she’s a good sport. I was just like “look, you know, we’re going
on this trip” and there wasn’t a lot of preparation, we’ll just see what happens. Our family likes to do outdoor adventures
and likes coming down to southern Utah. But we’ve never done a long adventure cycling
trip. Our daughter is six and a half and our son
is almost four and so our kids are just getting to the age when they can do this. One of the challenges was keeping the momentum
with the kids. We could be going along fine with the kids,
they’re just in their own mind space that’s positive and we could stop and all of a sudden
they’d get out of that. For our first adventure cycling trip with
our children, we opted for what’s called a “sag wagon.” That’s a vehicle that carries the group’s
gear, which a non rider or rotating member of the group drives. I feel like the quintessential aspect of bikepacking
is that we’re all just going to come to a place like Milford or Tropic and you’re moving
a little slower and you just kind of notice a little bit more. Any trip with my family is awesome. No matter what we’re doing. I mean, it’s inspired me to do this more. It’s a different way to see the country and
to see the world.

Thanks for the great video and message. We have 2 kids – daughter 6 and son 8 – who spend a lot of time outdoors with us. We're currently looking into doing some self-supporting overnight cycle trips and as you say, experiencing things differently at a slower pace. There's also the great satisfaction that come from covering distances under your own power that we buy into. Since before they were 3, they've both been able to hike 20 kms (12 miles) through fairly rugged terrain and have learned much about grit and how amazing they can be, no doubt as your kids are doing. So thanks for the great story, production and positive energy. Great to see no devices… 🙂 Cheers from Sydney, Aust – Dave
