Traveling the Baltic Countries From Lithuania to Latvia

Published by Darron Toy on

[Applause] and so that was a amazing meal dinner so I had potato pancakes with salmon and salmon eggs all right I think this is Oh all right I went out a little walking made a circle cuz that's the restaurant right there and so potato pancakes with like sliced salmon salmon eggs now these salmon eggs were it was very strange can't say I'm really a fan of that but the pancakes were amazing and the salmon and then also some dumplings with meat and a glass of red wine like the house red and then a glass of cherry wine rushing to catch a bus I have like 10 minutes 10 15 minutes before it takes off going to Riga Latvia only three days in Lithuania not enough time but that's where it goes it's winter I'm kind of rushing through places right now I think that must be the bus station up there and so I'm taking a Lux Express bus it's 16 euros for like a four hour or so bus ride not bad for crossing two countries only four hours these are small countries here and so it's a quarter till I actually have plenty of time bus leaves at 12:00 see what we got up here maybe this is a train oh maybe this isn't the bus station this is the train station I think the bus station should be nearby though so I missed my bus I think this is the first time in the Gabriel traveller adventure 30 years of traveling the world in which I missed a bus or train or plane that actually had a reservation for that I can think of anyways so miss the bus there's bad news and there's good news the bad news is they wouldn't honor my ticket for the next bus I had a you know paper printout of the tickets 16 euros and they just said sorry you're out of luck you have to buy a new ticket the good news is that the next bus leaves at 1:30 and that bus was supposed to be at 12 and so only an hour and a half later at this point it's like 12:30 12:40 something like that and so another 3045 minutes something until the bus leaves and then it's a four-hour ride and so I'll get there like five o'clock or something oh well 32 euros for a bus ticket now I'm going to see about grabbing a beer and relax a little bit before the bus goes one year of 30 for a beer all right 15 minutes until the bus get out there and so this is rigor and I've got my own here 14 minute walk away I thought that I would answer a question that people often ask which is how do I deal with you know cell phone service and data and the answer is t-mobile that is the short and simple answer is that I have t-mobile and they have the best international coverage of any US cell company and I don't have to do anything I just show up and it works just about anywhere that I go okay okay I've just figured out that I'm going the exact opposite direction that's how it often is with these things is it can be hard to figure out which way you got to start walking and so I recommended t-mobile for travelers they just work in almost every country that I have been to not every country it didn't work in United Arab Emirates or Oman or Jordan or Morocco so for some reason all Muslim countries but it's just a matter of they don't have a arrangement with the cell companies there whatever because it did work in Turkey and Malaysia and so now I'm going the right way the temperature is 31 degrees Fahrenheit so that is like negative 1 Celsius and it's Vilnius in Lithuania when it was like 25 Fahrenheit and so those like 5 degrees does make a difference so definitely a chill in the air but doing all right cool-looking trams and so got a head right here and I realized on the bus this is my 60th country Latvia number 60 an amazing milestone to have reached definitely kind of a soviet-era looking trams here reminds me a little of the ones in Bratislava Slovakia also a Iron Curtain country not part of the USSR like the Baltic countries were Lithuania Latvia Estonia we're all properly part of the USSR and so I think it's down this way and so I forgot to mention I have a a hostel reserved here that's two nights it's supposed to be in the old town it sounds really nice stoked to get there now I have to get across this street going to put the camera away and focus on getting to where I'm going so all checked in they're a little difficult to find it down this little tiny dead-end not even an alley little Lane playing or whatever a great location in the old town here and hostel is really nice really cool people it's like a yoga place kind of I guess she mentioned yoga classes happen there and I'm now going to head to a restaurant that I walked past on the way here and there was a nice lady out front and she kind of convinced me to come back a lot of really cozy looking places to eat and drink around here this old town is really spectacular Pub Queens I guess like a British pub yeah totally a British place there I'm here for two nights and I could stay again another night if I decide hello good evening as well but I think it's the one up here this I talked to before good evening I will I'm the guy that walked by with the big backpack on and so yep and so I said I would come back and thank you Hey like a cranberry sauce and roasted vegetables interesting thing here alright that's it for this video so far Latvia is looking really cool more coming I will be here tomorrow and definitely capture more of this very interesting looking city see ya

It's kinda' freaky & creepy, that entering the hostel there were 3 times 6 postboxes @ the 11th minute ! πŸ‘»πŸ€˜πŸ² 😈

Perhaps the greatest attacking chess player of them all was grandmaster Mikhail Tal…he was called 'the magician from Riga'. Some of his games are works of art…he had the reputation of offering unprotected pieces that if taken would lead his opponent into a world of hurt.

"You must take your opponent into a deep, dark forest where 2+2=5 and the path leading out is only wide enough for one." -Mikhail Tal

Wow Gabriel, Riga looks super great to me…fine restaurant, food, drink, and the waitress was drop dead beautiful to me. I didn't realize that Riga had such a large population.
Another amazing journey…I am 68 years old but if I traveled light, I could still shoulder a smaller pack…buckup Grandpa and hit the road right? πŸ˜‚ Happy Trails always…John

adidzis · July 30, 2019 at 2:59 pm

actually winter is not the best season to visit Latvia and Baltic states, except you are going to take a part in bobsleigh or skeleton competition πŸ˜‰

watching Dunkirk movie on the bus? Lux buses are very handy and comfortable…. love Baltic countries

J · July 30, 2019 at 2:59 pm

It felt warmer in Riga because Riga sits on shore of Baltic sea and any place so near by sea is warmer than more in-land one

Birgit Nazarian · July 30, 2019 at 2:59 pm

I have a question. Where WAS the bus pickup spot because I’m planning to take that same Lux bus from Vilnius to Riga. That’s always my fear – getting lost trying to find the right bus meeting spot!

best in Riga in summer is yurmala beach

Amazing restaurant (at the beginning). Looks like the intro of some dracula movie. With that I mean it is fascinating, not the opposite. Did you mention how much you have paid for that meal?

Also google maps does allow offline access. You just need to download the city maps you need while on WiFi. Google maps has been my friend all over the world.

It’s honestly annoying seeing men in the comments talking about girls as if they are sex workers and belong to the men, it’s not ok. Slavs are hot, but they are human too

I'll take Riga over Berlin any day of the week. In fact, I try to spend all of my vacations in "Eastern" (Poland and Eastward) Europe. It's cheaper, safer, and just an overall better experience.

Jon Woods · July 30, 2019 at 2:59 pm

Watch out for the girls standing outside bars and restaurants. Treat them as sirens whose job it is to suck you inside to rip you off – I lived in Riga for 2 years, so that's a wholly different experience from a fleeting tourist visit.

bizbite2 · July 30, 2019 at 2:59 pm

The bus station was just next to it πŸ˜‚ you poor thing πŸ˜…πŸ˜Š but whatever happened to all of us πŸ˜… thanks for visiting Lithuania πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜ŠπŸ˜ŠπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌ

Dude that is a good deal for a beer (waiting for the bus)… about US$1.50! Too bad you missed the bus.

I have always wondered just how Veg's fare in such meat-dependent, and carnivorous countries.

Why yes, I fart Rainbows! · July 30, 2019 at 2:59 pm

Gabriel, H ow many of the buses actually have lavatories in them?

S B · July 30, 2019 at 2:59 pm

So happy you travel here as my Grandfather on my Mother's side came over here & I'll finally get to see Lithuania because of you . Thank you so very much Gabriel !
