Tour de France 2019 Stage 19 Highlights: Chaos On The Col de l'Iseran

Published by Darron Toy on

welcome back to GCN racing today was stage 19 of the Tour de France yesterday nairo quintana showed us all that he is still one of the best climbers in the world storming up the Gullah ba and down the descent into valor on taking his third career stage victory at the tour in the GC battle al Filipe conceded some time on the colibri but descended like a demon to get back onto the group of favorites and defend his yellow jersey one step close to paris one step closer to being the first French Tour winner in 34 years today though he'll have another battle on his hands the second of three consecutive stage in the high mountains of the Alps this one featured the highest point in the race the chordal is our 13 kilometers long at seven and a half percent with the top at two thousand seven hundred and seventy meters above sea level along descent afterwards and in a mountaintop finish on the Mont a dirty new light yesterday it was a very aggressive start to the stage four of the best climbers in the race would form the first significant break nearly Bilbao and Harada along with Dan Martin who took the point on the first kom of the day the big new zone from the first half of the stage was this thibaut pinot which started the day in 5th place on the GC back at the race doctors car for treatment on a tour muscle in sty meanwhile up front a larger group had formed highest on GC there were Iran and Valverde 9th and 10th on GC respectively both within six minutes of the yellow jersey this was utterly heartbreaking to watch thibaut pinot in tears consoled by his teammate William Bonney as he stopped got off his bike into his team car and exited the Tour de France been a race of incredible highs and lows for the Frenchmen this year but that one's going to hurt for a long time to come here's the highest point of this year's race the coda lazara the scene of some epic battles over the years and this year would be no difference with seven K's to the summit Neely was on the front runner for teammate Caruso in the kom competition but the gaps the yellow jersey group was coming down quickly and that's because team in eos had hit the front they realized that if they was a crack Alif elite they need to go early and they'd soon isolated him and Rick mast unable to stick with his leader cantana to was paying for his efforts of yesterday he'd lose touch with the yellow jersey group of seven case to the top and then this happened Garrett thomas launching an attack with six cases of summit hour philippe initially unable to follow my accelerations felt the end from roman bar date had been no care and points for him at the top of the climb thomas was caught though and i was cries by who was the next to go with the gradient reaching 11% thomas de claw his way back up but alle fleet was on his limit and perhaps over it he'd start to lose big chunks of time then more drama at the front they could burn out launching his own attack from the GC group cries like unable to follow thomas stuck exactly where he was he was never huge the gap to burn now versus the GC riders behind but it did balloon to ala philippe which did a couple of cases atop this man was the virtual leader on the road and how talented is he just 22 years old only his second Grand Tour one by one he distanced all the rise from the break that he'd caught eventually even cracking simon yates by the top he'd have almost two minutes an advantage over ala philippe and close to a minute on his teammate thomas with cries bike in that group behind but you ready for some more drama on the descent there was a freak snowstorm which hit it snow plows were quickly on the scene and did their best to clear the road but it was so violent it caused a landslide and they had no choice but to cancel the stage an athlete visibly frustrated as he heard the news on race radio as was simon yates who was looking to take his third stage win basically there was confusion all round with the riders understandably in some ways since it was still glorious weather at this point on the stage it's been a tour de france like no other this year have one huge mountain stage still to come you get a distinct impression that anything still could happen i remember another time quite like this stages have been previously shortened but never cancelled midway through i think there's a mixture of disappointment and relief amongst riders at different ends of the race discussion going on between geraint thomas and Vincenzo niibori who are both clearly not so unhappy with the situation when you see this though you can see that they really did have no choice but to cancel this one of the last men to actually stop racing it was Rigoberta Iran but as ever he seemed in good spirits as he climbed into the team car this is race director Christian Poonam chatting with Gary Thomas in the end after some discussion it was decided that the tines for the stage we take on the top of the chordal is Iran but without any timing equipment up there it would take hours for the result to be announced eventually we got it though no stage winner today but here is the new general classification still only the top five there as we record this but it's egg and burn now who is the new leader of the Tour de France 45 seconds in front of you lon Alif philippe who slipped down to second Garin thomas in third at one minute and three seconds cries right there in fourth at 115 and the manual Bookmen up to fifth at one minute and 42 tomorrow it's the final day in the mountains and the highest mountaintop finish of this year's race ever so slightly longer than today stayed at 130 kilometers they'll start the core made the Roseland after just 15 case climbing 1250 meters in 20 kilometers but it's the final climb that's the real feast bout RN a whopping thirty three point four kilometers long only 5% average but with the steepest section at the top which peaks at two thousand three hundred and sixty five meters above sea level it could create some big gaps it's the last chance of the GC riders to join us again tomorrow to see what happened another reminder now to click on the subscribe button if you haven't done so already and on the belly icon that way you'll be notified every time we put one of our racing videos up see you tomorrow

Can anyone beat Egan Bernal now? Should the stage have been shortened?

Allan Virimai · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

Bernal should have been awarded this stage victory because times were taken at the summit. Bernals ride rings of froome at the Giro 2018

R Lorenzo · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

It's about time a non white person wins this race. I'm very surprised they let him compete. It's usually reserved only for Europeans.

Super Cool Ramen Guy · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

No Froome, no fun

Gerard Wainwright · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

Tour de France can not make you right with God, it can not save your soul from Hell… Only Jesus can so, please seek the Lord while he may be found…

Hell is real and most people are headed there 😞

Hans-Christian Francke · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

The Tour is still boooring. The intercom is destroying the sport.

whk759 · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

Hey Poels : "fuck off dirty bastard" ! 🖕

Norwall Music · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

Love the entertaining tech stuff. 🔥

Time Travel With Tim · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

I guess they never had to ride the C & O Canal Towpath after a rain…

TheTrackmaniaaa · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

What a stage! Last night I was dreaming that they finished the race on Zwift in their hotel rooms.

mariobahama · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

everything is stil open, a lot of things can happen , and because today climb is very long, there are moments when its get more flat, and riders can catch a breath, so alaphilippe stil has a chance. alaphilippe and his fans were sad, because he would have gotten time back in the desent, or even get to group kruijswijk and thomas, but like a former rider said, he probably had to loss on the last climb again and probably loose more time as it is now, in fact all riders had benefits and disadvantages of the cancelled climb

riquelmeone · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

Bernal surely had the best weather forecast

resmen81 · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

if there was no stage winner then why on earth did they also not keep the times status quo as per the previous stage

John Wilmington · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

I'm like… O M G ! 😃

teddy paragas · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

we did not know what happen to stage 19 in this video the race is stop. how come egan bernal will be in the overall in classification

miklos pinter · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

No life racers! It is a pity! Fear some colt and ice? In the 40-60s REAL cyclist NOT FEAR the power of mother nature!

N G · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

alaphillipe's descent showed so much panache and bravery, showed the rest of the world what wearing yellow means to the french… skill and madness in equal measure… chapeau

General Clasher · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

I wanted Bernal to win this year's tour but not like this.

Ben T · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

The Tour is no more exciting

31keyser · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

Bernal, please, i’m begging you…don’t use those sunglasses…

Riding Home · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

Tomorrow 33 Km climb to the finish, really hope to see a showdown featuring G Thomas & E Bernal. May the force be with you. Ineos/Sky will win yet again, but this year's TdF was captivating. Really looking forward to the Vuelta!

Doper cheater life loser Lance is salty because it is a good race

linglingjr · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

This is the first year that I've watched every stage of the tour and it kinda sucks knowing that there will probably never be a crazier, more exciting TDF.

jayaybe1 · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

So refreshing to see that Columbian drug cartels have no say in the outcome of the Tour de France……………oh, wait a minute…………..

Mao Garsiya · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

Rigoberto Uran lol !!
Good energy

Bris Vegas · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

stage 20 is going to be epic 🙂

fs · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

What did the race doctor spray on the athlete?

george mira · July 29, 2019 at 2:11 pm

Egan for good now – if the HC is not canceled for tomorrow, E never gan come back.

I was hoping for some French tops, and when we saw Thibaut fall, well, 'twas thought that he who would not countenance the fleers and scorn of those who would leave yon french crushing a cup of whine in arrears, would strike.
Alas! One o f his nine lives was spent below, and 'e, too, was gone, before Egan could be challenged to turn and draw.

In truth, I had no favorites, desiring that all would be favored.
A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe –

many have thought to come, but Egan, 'e go.

They should have finished the stage cyclocross style lol
