One of my friends recently passed away after a long battle with cancer. He was so special to me and everyone who knew him, and even helped me build the backyard studio where I recorded the first SYML songs. I wrote "Flags" before he passed and started playing it on tour to cope with the loss. It’s been therapeutic and gutting. It’s not uncommon for people to come up to me after each show and share stories about cancer. The unfortunate fact is that almost everyone has one.

One of the stories that stuck with me was about a train in India. Patients who lacked access to treatment, due to expense or proximity, were taking an overnight "cancer train" to a government-run hospital where they could receive treatment. I couldn’t get the story out of my head. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I'd never thought about the global experience of cancer, how people living in poverty deal with it, and how their environment may increase their chances of getting it. Which led to an idea.

I met a filmmaker named Sil Van Der Woerd at one of my concerts in Amsterdam. He's part of a team that creates music videos and short films with a goal of advocacy and awareness. So I went to them with this idea: would you go to India and capture part of the story that is the "cancer train?" That's how they met Sapna and her family. It's estimated that 90% of children diagnosed with cancer live in low-to-middle-income countries, like Sapna.

Jorik and the Studio Birthplace team were so taken by their time in India that they created a fund for Sapna and other patients like her. I hope that you'll join in their mission. A portion of every "Flags" sale, stream, and video view will be donated to their fund. You've already done a small part by clicking "play" on the video, but we'd invite you to learn more and make a direct donation here:

I just don't have any words. Some girls and boys are busy doing their makeup and making themselves more and more attractive by surgeries WHILE on the other hand there are people struggling to get themselves feed for at least two time a day.
We should be more grateful for we have whole healthy body

Just ……. wow!❤️

Tengetile Sikhosana · March 2, 2020 at 2:53 pm

How can such a beautiful song have an attachment to such a tragedy? India and more countries lack resources and rely, unknowingly, on the very things that cause cancer. People should be further educated about such.

Jennifer Patterson · March 2, 2020 at 2:58 pm

Got to meet SYML, got to tell my cancer story…and how hearing this song live devastated me a little bit. We suffered a loss, but we were lucky by comparison to the rest of the un/underdeveloped world. Access to my mother’s care was NEVER burdensome. It was never a question of treatment or rent; we were good for both. That life-saving care is not readily available everywhere on this globe, and affordable, is an atrocity. Those of us who had enough should do all we can to change that.

Last year my mom has been diagnosed with cancer and after a month my sister also got diagnosed with it , it was hard .. but we got through it , and both are cancer free now , this video clip made me think .. even though it was hard for us .. but we were blessed , because .. we live in a country where healthcare is free and they give you the emotional support you need ( the patient and the loved ones) + place to stay for free if you lived far away from hospital + money to support a healthy diet till you cancer free , Cancer is a fucking scary thing , and I can’t imagine dealing with it while trying to survive day by day : (

Jameson Bornholdt · March 2, 2020 at 4:21 pm

The beginning of the video when the father is spraying pesticides on the crops, and then the note at the end about how the pesticides are causing cancer in the region 💔

But what other choice does he have if that's their only way of living

I lost my daughter to ALL 2014 she was only 10. I hope your song can bring light to the fact that we need a Cure for our children not enough is done!! And they won’t spend money on how it is caused. Cancer does not discriminate! Everyday is a living hell for me not watching my daughter grow up she would be turning 16 not a day goes by without tears. F cancer!!

MJoy Music · March 3, 2020 at 9:39 pm

This is so thoughtful. It has such a meaning and I like how it really tells about the life-threatening effects that the environment and living conditions in some areas can have on people. While many of us probably don't usually view these conditions in such a critical matter, thinking that these are all human lives with their friends and family who value them and have to deal, maybe even with their loss, is dreadful. I mean, a person may just be a person to others but when this person holds a special place in your heart, it makes you realise the value and significance of every single human life.

When I was about 6 years old, I had a best friend who was 21, IDK but we clicked even though the gigantic age gap. But I remember that soon I just stopped seeing him around. When I was 9 (aka the age when life came crashing down) my mom had said that he was dead. He died a long time ago because he was fighting leukemia and his mother didn't want me to know (I'm close to her as well). That really crushed me.
