Suzuki Jimny to Antarctica. New Zealand Road Trip. Part-2

Published by Darron Toy on

lots of people are chickening out not me look a duck you think they're slow leak water when it rains I know what we're getting I've not seen it with my own eyes but Guin doesn't know what we're getting she has no idea what we've swapped it as fender for we've just completed an exploration of the North Island in a land row defender now we're on the South Island it looks to be like the channel asked and you've delivered with something different oh it's so cute it looks like something you want to put on your desk you know is there like a little chunky paperweight yes it's Suzuki's a 1.5 liter chimney inside Haley the word chimney means smaller than a flea I'm Andrew San Pio white join me as I share my passion for bowling four-wheel drive trucks and traveling to the remotest parts the world so we've ditched one of our backs have left one of it we actually packed pre-packed last night oh by the way we're in Christchurch this is now the scythe island the South Island New Zealand and this is the part of New Zealand that I've been the most excited about apart from me we okay apart from seeing friends this and Hobbit okay apart from will we you've got the key will this lot fit with our camera equipment inside the little chimney oh yes it will look at that simplicity itself and I see in each is oh the art here that would be very simple and sit on your lap while you sit on a rock oh this is great I'm actually now excited I was thinking because remember guys you a lot of you are said review a chimney I'm going to do apart from my trip I'm going to do a thorough review of the chimney put it through its paces within reason of course but is it gonna be good enough for two people to go on a serious camping trip so far the answer is yes amazingly because I didn't think I would be saying yes at this point okay let's pack it plenty of room mmm can you a room yeah for a hobbit you know I think she was saving up that line you know she the thing is that they she thinks it's better than it really is well just humor her humour her smile a laugh that's it that's it it is my strong point absolutely perfect well done in fact very well my darling still it's perfect it'll just push it as it closes it'll push those in perfect you better than you think you are clear off we're in amazing seriously amazing I thought this would be terrible it's all shiny and new I see the first of the prevalent okay just slide your seat forward a bit gonna if you if you move your seat forward there's enough space yeah and then you'll be able to get a total this is brilliant I love it this is mine no no before let's go we are going to eggs on top of my bucket list is Antarctica I've never been turned talked to cows hoping to your goats in there talk to you one day maybe I'll never get there maybe well who knows however there's a experience the Antarctica exhibition very close to the air crushed just Airport and we must get ajust a hotel for the night and tomorrow I've got to have a camera repaired because I've had a problem very unlikely I mean unlike me to have chem problems well I want to shoot but I do have one I think I can sort it out there but I need to go chemist or tomorrow morning and then we all head north so just I just said I want one of these is a run my little run around around Perth it's so silly that's wonderful and everything's slightly over the top but not too much just a bit just a bit everything's been given a necessary little so it just got a little they've given it a little pump little pump up a little bit bigger in but sillier than it needs to be okay we're off risky you'd always read a few lines for the steering and will be on no Sarah had I said the word Antarctica and we found ourselves in a Hoglund tract search and rescue vehicle used in Antarctica they are here to take people for joy rides simulating Antarctic conditions like a crevasse and a hill 45 degree and lots of tires it's a three-speed automatic is that right okay it's a three speed automatic gearbox so differently singing oh sure yeah I can see that and they're tight can you don't Edie taking luggage okay I would only be people travelling in the front they pro you wouldn't have seats in the back okay so that's the driveshaft what we doing do in there is not what they do in Antarctica you're pretty much be going straight lines and em tied okay yeah but here we might we they don't get pushed all the parts come from Germany they're really expensive to keep on the road all these machines our excites the black one has actually been to the Falklands so that was military in the Falklands years ago their hours are about 80s I think the most recent one might be in 92 ooh la la I'll take them Jeff how many you got okay you're right this is the center's Antarctic simulator Nicole so windchill now is minus 16 degrees it is in fact a large fridge om temperature is minus 8 with some fans and some decorations means to give visitors a taste of what it might be like in Antarctica and these studs people [Applause] I'm sorry you're not fooling me Antarctica would be a million times worse go to Bali think Bali think we can go into shelter they got a shelter here lots of people are chickening out not me not me I'm gonna bloody freeze but it turns out though that this experience probably wasn't a good idea for me alright our tripperz met with a little bit of a hiccup and that I've been sick I don't get sick often actually get sick very very rarely is that right granny uh you know so we basically emptied the local pharmacy know who is there and dose myself up and actually spent most of yesterday asleep I'm feeling that you don't tell me you're coming down with something feeling quite a bit better today but we aren't going to take it easy and so we're now going to head towards the mountains to do what I really wanted to do in New Zealand and that is to take pictures of beautiful mountains launcher one of New Zealand's best-known tourist attractions is lake pukaki because on some days of the year looking over the lake one can see New Zealand's highest peak Mount Cook we are very lucky it's only on very few days each year that there is no cloud obscuring the summit three thousand seven hundred and twenty four meters that's twelve thousand three hundred and forty nine feet Gwyn your name is Gwinnett which is Welsh for what we are looking at over there we're not a very large mountain renessa I'm told means the kind of snow gets when the sunshine is one night just like that and the a peg milky whiteness seen in the water is called glacial flour fine-grained such sized particles of rock generated by the mechanical grinding of the bedrock by glacial erosion [Applause] [Applause] good morning I have woken up with a horrible horrible horrible flu it's been chasing me for the last three days and I've been warding it off but now last night it hit me so today we're gonna take it a bit easy and given the temperatures in South Island New Zealand they're down to two three four five degrees I think camping is going to be probably actually quite dangerous because well we don't have the means to stay warm and anyway I've I'm into mice this morning first is I feel like staying in bed and just shaking it off but the second is there's a little chimney outside and it's saying come and drive me and I am genuinely excited about driving that car which is what I'm gonna do so let's go keys please I don't have them yes you do no you don't the story of the whites lives keys please where did I leave my sunglasses do I have my wallet yeah we're normal human beings back on the road we are heading deeper into the mountains through the majestic rolling grasslands of the Otago plateau oh this beautiful glorious morning we're now off to wanaka I have my lovely lovely memories of won a cup of cooked one occurs where my father took his sons his three boys in 2002 to go and watch a magnificent airshow the town called wanaka and the event was called warbirds over wanaka new zealand is a world leader in the restoration of vintage aircraft and some of those restorations take place here in wanaka and every two years there is a major airshow here called warbirds of ever wanaka and I remember it's so so clearly we're getting so excited we would drive along this very road and right here right here were parked aircraft all beautiful fighters and and it was just fantastic and I listened to my brothers excitement which we drove into this this area here kath soucie work and work and Polly's Oh party couldn't believe what we were seeing missing this aircraft is beautiful restaurant restoration projects and they were gonna fly for us I'm gonna go and see what it's like there now there's a museum here we'll go and have a look at that so this is the we work we work we were stationed now you can see it's a busy airport has lots and lots of things happening everywhere if I had to move to New Zealand I'd come and live in wanaka can we live in wanaka can we come and live in wanaka please each can we live in Monica no I mean listen when I come and see any day show me the cinema where I can commence the Avengers in game okay we'll set up we'll buy a cinema complex and movie what's wrong with our movies so now you see yeah you can't really see it very well but the way that the organizers are educational Rick relativism me Valley just the other side of the main district and that what they do is they simulate dogfights and they'll have the goodies flying Spitfires and hurricanes shooting down baddies were actually there were basically cards and then they would have they would plume smoke trails and it would dive into the valley as if they were crashing it was quite funny it was a good show it was a really good show while the picture quality of the video that I shot back in 2002 isn't great sound quality is reasonable and you can have you can enjoy that magnificent sound of the Merlin engines in all their this is a memorial to a guy called Richard Pierce who is a locally credited with being the first man to have actually undertaken a powered flight even before the Wright brothers but he was never really recognized internationally in the way that the Wright brothers were but still they regard him as being a local hero to get on the next flight on this airplane and believe it or not I also have a window seat all right Hank from a local website and we're using the edge excited to go on Explorer mode to find the track Melora let's take a sequence I invested 41 kilometres it looks like this is not just a four-wheel-drive track I found the menorah Lakes 4×4 track on 4×4 explorer CEO Kinsey it's a website where you can access hundreds of four-wheel-drive trails all over New Zealand including GPS map downloads it's a really great resource I'm afraid I haven't really been able to find anywhere where I can will give the Jimmy a good old off-road test everything I've tried to I mean this is a car level 3 trial and it's just walking it but it's not a difficult trail even at a level 3 standards it's not a difficult trail so um my conclusion is off-road this thing will be enormous amount of fun and will probably surprise a lot of people who might look down at it and AH how can that possibly be any good I actually think that in almost all terrains with the exception of very steep climbs this little chimney will do brilliantly and the only reason why I say that steep climbs short wheelbase vehicles traditionally struggle with deep plunge because the vehicles weight pivots on the rear axle and it lifts and takes weight off the front and therefore you lose traction apart from that all in all the Jimny is an extremely likeable vehicle with so many good points and so few bad ones a full in-depth review soon on this channel turn now to head towards the East Coast and the high peaks of the southern alps we are going to what is New Zealand's premier tourist attraction the not to be missed scenes of milford sound and twisty whiny next to a fee award which occasionally get a glimpse of as you drive up the road and all of this but in South Island New Zealand associated with gobsmacking series scenery its milford sound we can't stay there there's no combination there it's a fjord we're going to get on board a boat and photograph what they can show us highlights ability and it's getting yes and it's getting more dramatic right every kilometer including what looks like a mineshaft but is in fact a road tunnel through the mountain and of norfolk's and we hitting arch to go and see a whole lotta see me in case you all think I'm a complete clip I have run out of superlatives New Zealand is not just scenery there are just only so many words in any language used to describe join me next time when I do a full in-depth review of the Suzuki Jimny if you enjoyed the show please subscribe thank you for watching

Unfortunately the Jimny has performed poorly in the crash tests. If you love your family don’t buy one.

Paul S · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

milford sound is even better in the rain, and it rains a lot there,7 METRES a year

Simon Smith · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

I've not used the new Jimny but had three of them in the past. For gamekeeper duties, in any weather, and deer stalking/game shooting/dog walking they are a great little vehicle. However, driving from the South West of England to the North of Scotland got old really quickly.

rui machado · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

soo goodd….great video andrew…

R Soul · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

You are a lucky devil, getting to hang out with all those friendly New Zealand people. They are (mostly) all such nice and easy to get along with folks.

o0motorhead0o · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

You have a cold not a flu…never confuse the two!
Other than that loving the trip around Aotearoa

Dwayne John · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Just needs a turbo diesel and then it would be perfect

Peter McAulay · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

I have one of these new Jimny’s. I downsized from a turbo diesel 80series Landcruiser with 2” lift on 33” tyres. There’s always a bigger and better of anything, but I believe the person having the most fun out there is the one who’s winning. Never underestimate the fun factor of this little car. The big cars are awesome as they’re big and tough and bad ass and ride soft … but doesn’t mean they’re more fun. The Jimny is full-on 4wd and as fun as you could have and then drive home in a/c comfort with airbags and collision controls protecting your kids. And this model is pretty comfy really, even at 6’2”. It’s just great, economical fun

conners · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Great to see you both this side of the ditch ! Hopefully you get to do a 4wd station trip one of this day's and get 1 or 2 more views in.
Ps did you get to sand fly point in Milford, savage little buggers lol

Hery Friday · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

greetings from Baku and as always, great video.

Flyingcrocodile46 · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Nice. Has me thinking of doing a two or three trip around the south Island

kchortu · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

I love you and Gwynns dynamic, more videos with her please! I really appreciate your work. It is a superb blend of story telling, dynamic visuals, adventure, and real life. Thank you fro sharing it with us.

SpectreOZ · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Loved the video Andrew but the crème de la crème was those singing Rolls Royce Merlins… just bloody awesome 👍

Wade Smith · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Drove the same route (in reverse) in a britz last week! Those Otago grasslands were :O

Panthera Onca · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Great video and good job getting a Jimny out. I’ve had an 80s SJ and great memories of it and now have a 2017 Jimny one of the last before this one appeared. Lots of fun and if you travel fairly light with max 2 people it’s totally fine for a few days. Will live out of it for a week at the end of summer on a many thousand km trip through Eastern Europe’s forests and mountains and cannot wait! Keep going Andrew you’re great!

123kspencer · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Antarctica stimulator? Sign me up.

astondriver · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Sshesh Andrew. From Mavora lakes its South West to Milford Sound not East. U missed real 4×4 tracks on the east coast of the Alps. Accessible up Rangitata or Rakaia rivers.

David Bell · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

You could have gone from Wanaka to Cromwell to garston to milford over the the Nevis range would have been a great off road journey.

Newson7248 · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Can't wait for the full Jimny review! Looks a great little vehicle.

Jim · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Yes you got the Jimny 😉

Syed Sadaf Zafar · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Waiting for that review !

Stason Smith · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Andrew come to Russia for real 4WD experience in Siberia))) winter -50 or summer when it's hot)

Ozzy Paul · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

I love seeing Andrew and Gwynnie together, there're like 2 teenage kids in love.

Philip Jooste · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

We're fortunate that the Jimny was launched in South Africa before most other countries, and already a plethora of excellent locally-developed after-market accessories are available.

astondriver · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

What happened to the rest of the north island? Part 1 only did the very north

Martin Caban · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

The smile on your face when you got into the Jimny says it all !!!

Andy G · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

I'm starting to think that after my D2 I'll be test driving a Jimney, especially after seeing the Defender teaser pics. Fair play to Suzuki for sticking to the formula.

Those little Suzukis are so underrated, I had 1975, LJ50 2-stroke 3 cylinder soft-top. 👍

Creative Noise Phil · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

you are indeed a very lovely couple.

haanjamiis · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Such a cool couple. Probably 1 secret is being apart for enough that you don't annoy each other 24/7/365 😉 And Jimny is such a cute car with no pretense to it. You know what's it for. It's cheap and it's capable . Not for large family's and probably not very enjoyable at highway but it's not made for that. And I heard You can get defender and g-class lip-kits for it 🙂

Matthew James · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

New Zealand is one of the most jaw dropping places of all and I wish we had the jimney in Canada.

Bengt Klingberg · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Love your videos. I am a Swahili speaker since birth but I never heard JIMNY in Swahili. What are your sources for that? Maybe I missed something I need to know.

Joel R · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

I wish Suzuki would import those to the US. Jeeps are so over rated.

Shairol Azhar · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

first rule…. don't argue with women… hahahaha…. love your adventure trip with wife…

Heath Wells · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

As a Christchurch (born and bred) local welcome to my city and welcome to the South Island! Thanks for your great content here and I wish you a lovely visit… from a long time 4×4 owner and past member, Canterbury Landrover Owners Club (mine was a series 2A)…

Elliott Grossman · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Those planes are beautiful!!!! Here in the US we have a fair amount of restored warplanes as well beautiful pieces of history and definitely deserve to be preserved and flown!

애미기러기 · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Yes!!! Come and live in Wanaka its beautiful place!! Hi Andrew Its Kylie I met you at petrol station , Te anau. Me and my boys will move down to south isaland Mossburn farming area in a month, we like there so much. And I really enjoy watching your NZ series.

Maverick224 · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

A couple of things, re Gwynn coment re a theatre, Wanaka has one of the best little movie theatre’s around anywhere in NZ, they make they’re own ice cream onsite, you can have beers, wine and they have couches in the seating and cars for kids it’s an awesome place, right in the centre of Wanaka, always have the latest movies, also if you wanted some test for the Jimni why you didn’t go up the Rangitata to see Edorus also a key tourist spot for any LOR fan since Gwyn is one and also out the Jimni to the test, also stayed in some high country environment to experience outback NZ, perplexes me, seem like you guys are doing the normal loopy stuff. I’m not sure if you meant Mavorva lakes or Manora, but Mavorva lakes where you could have done some proper 4WD fishing and hiking like the Greenstone or driven up to Mt Nicolas Stn on that side of Lake Wakatipu, turn off at the Key which you would have gone through to go to Te Anau to Milford. Maybe time, but you seem to be missing out the best of NZ which is strange vs your normal reflections of countries you visit, not trying to be critical but it seems very tourist like not Overland which they’re is plenty of to explore if a bit different than Aus or SA in access. Btw I like the Jimni…

MADBONE · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

"Where can I see endgame" 😂😂😂

Caught me off guard almost choked on my sandwich

Bryan Corbellini · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

I lived on the South Island for four months during the winter of 2015. Every time I drove past a vista I thought this is the most beautiful view I’ve ever seen and nothing could match it. Then I’d drive around the next bend. I repeated that line a dozen times per road trip.

EMU4WD · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

I’m surprised you don’t have more subscribers. Great entertaining channel. Steve

My Spaniels Hunting & Trialing in New Zealand · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

I have driven those roads many times and always appreciate the beauty but watching your video I really appreciated your camera work and editing, Well done, I am glad you and Gwynn enjoyed your trip in New Zealand.

Kelly Drolet · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Antarctica – try Alberta Canada. This past February had -25 to -40c for weeks. We work in it to about -30c plus wind chill. Love the Jimni!

Jeff H · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Hello Andrew. First off, thank you for your work. I truly enjoy all of it. Now to the point of my comment. I suspect you may be sick because of dirty air filters supplying cold air in the simulation room. I live in a truck six days per week normally, and I know what it's like to be contaminated with "bad air" . The problem could be black mold in the piping. Carry on friend. You've a long drive to Canada. See you here soon I hope. Stay well. Another day of happy pills will be interesting in the Jimny! Haha.

Uzzi Huerta Pacheco · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Amazing! my favorite video

Salty Pretzel · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Great series! Looking forward to the Jimny review by a person who is actually properly qualified to give 4wd reviews.

Roza · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

There are two cinemas in Wanaka Andrew

Clint 0z · May 16, 2019 at 8:51 am

Wow some of your best camera work I've seen so far 🙂
