South Africa’s Langa Township Deals with “Poverty Tourists” – The Jim Jefferies Show

Published by Darron Toy on

Cape Town has lots of luxury but in between your boat rides your frou-frou cocktails and your mountaintop yoga some visitors squeeze in an authentic experience and that's where Comedy Central sent me welcome to langa township all right all right so so a kitchen a bedroom oh sorry coffee so why am I taking a guided tour through one of the poorest neighborhoods in South Africa it started out like a lot of things questionable ideas by rich people in recent years a growing number of travel agencies around the world are offering poverty tours and as more tourists from wealthy countries visit slums the practice has sparked a great deal of controversy it's true well upstairs pay about $100 regarded tour of the poor part of town I'm expecting to see extreme poverty but I think there's beauty and everything I'm glad I don't have to live there I'm surprisingly not all the locals are cool with it I think he's degrading its kind of inhuman so you think they are seeing you as animals yeah so why do people take these to us is it just the social media likes does anyone actually benefit to find out I spoke with Tony Elvin who does social enterprise development here in Cape Town people have called them poverty tours human Safari poster tours in Safari yeah part of the problem is this world's relationship with Africa we get lots of people coming over bu a visitor and you're coming to do your Africa years and save some black people with flies all over them Red Nose Day it's always big always got a comedian surrounded like this I think Township tourism is uttering you're sort of saying I went in there and had a look but fucking out got out with me life there you can go to white bit now for margarita you know I mean Tony's part of the debate about who benefits from these tours does the money help the towns or does it just go to a select few tour operators do the locals profit out of it not just to be running the tours but the people who are being looked at or taking photographs oh they'll burn them some money right I mean they I mean everyone's getting paid right but in terms of that having a deep lasting effect and chain in the community and improving the community no he makes a good point breezing through and grabbing a souvenir does seem like a superficial way to see a place but luckily someone's trying to do it better meat savvy way bin de Bie runs a tour company here in Langer which is the oldest township in Cape Town he also founded a school a film program and a kids dance company I sat down with him to discuss sustainable tourism it's puzzling when when people are coming into the turn ship and treat a community and people like a talk like misery well yes how do you move from a talk to a visit we did things firstly walk interact to the community they have to taste the food dealer you have to sleep what we see that is not at all what typically in your clientele our biggest Clinton is jimin's Germans yes because they like saying we're whole lot of people in confined areas that they can control I was it takes the big ways to it for myself and boy who is a full of information about 50,000 people living longer but townships across South Africa are home to around 18 million people they were created during apartheid as a way to keep the black populations separate from the white carnauba dick move who one interesting result is that language developed a culture and economy all its own for example this is a nightclub then a club it's close to the moment is right inside here I reckon this guy run something this guy is the pound sighs oh no the teacher does everything the strip clubs much worse the dancer I'll let me explain that we're doing that one I never know what to do yeah one two three four I declare a thumb is it more of a bar is there dancing in there yeah there's a music you say do you get whatever white people coming in trying to drink at your bar or everyone can come there's a lot of cut they are coming from Germans Germans well it's gone right I feel like a guest not a tourist I mean look at all the friends I'm making look at all those Germans with a different terror company posing children for pictures wait a minute is that what I look like – I don't want to look like a German maybe doing tourism the right wave requires more effort and in my travels I've had most of my best cultural exchanges over a few Frosty's so I made severe weight take me to the local pub so the PA is actually not served in classes everyone drinks from the same thing but don't you worry about one person has a cold then we're all getting the fucking cold the place to pay for sharing I'm a pretty hardcore germaphobe that is Anthony Bourdain tortoise it's always worth risking a cold to have a real cultural experience and I'd love to create that cultural experience for my friend Andrew Andrew everybody I can't because you know when I drink alcohol this is I am your outfield producer emblem delicious it's a bit smokey this guy Felix gonna drink the whole fucking lot this is all three gulp same you see he's fucking Adam Apple going up in there see a bucket of beer means instant mates then I asked the B way what's a good eat around here that would be a sheep's head australian enough to know that's a sheep's head what's with the yellow paint it to put the skin from the fire right so if you're a Simpson you wouldn't find that racist you've cut them in half check out the plains right and you boil it for two hours you look like here now I'm also a vegetarian so Andrew if you want to have some sheep head yeah that's all right that's all right you should watch this guy try to eat pizza it's the same thing sorry what did we learn how can you be a responsible tourist without looking like some sort of German because this just doesn't happen in poor parts of Africa people visit the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans stroll eight mile in Detroit even take good life tours through South Central LA now it's okay to visit but don't call from the back of the two of us or snap selfies with homeless people just find a legitimate tour guide be open to new things and remember you're in a neighborhood so act like you'd want someone to act in your neighborhood and just in case bring in Andrew

UrMomGay NoU · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Devious Verendus · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

We get z lot of german tourists here in the Faroe Islands. I guess old germans wanna see the world they tried to conquer

C. Jones · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Poor Andrew.😂

Kyle DeepNutt · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

I would eat that sheep head in a heart beat, that's good eatin

TheIvmanProject · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

This whole video is a paradox

JdK 52 · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

So Jim doesn't drink from the cup, doesn't eat the food, and barely spends half a day in this township while making a video to profit from said township. How is this any different from the povery tourists? At least they paid the natives for the tour. What a virtue signaling loser. And yet, you losers thumbs up the video like he did something effective here.

Ricardo Pimentel · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Go Andrew!

Matika_Tika · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Meanwhile Jim made some nice moneys off of these people at the same time 🙂

Tumbox · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

00:57 Oh yeah, because most of those people are glad to live there.
New rules: These tours have a mandatory 2 week stay at a house next to the nightclub with no money, no cell phone, and cameras (except film crew), 2 days worth of clothing, eat only what you are given or can find for yourself and 10,000 euro donation to the community upon completion. Total immersion.

dagda3000 · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

LOL, I am German and I deliberately drove through Compton on my way to Disney Land. But hey, I was a fan of all these black gangsta movies (Menace II Society, etc.).

janos laszlo · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

It wasn't nice of Jim to refuse to drink beer 🙁

Taha AMZ · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

You used the wrong picture in "snap selfies with homeless people"
The picture was taking in Morocco.. and the person wasn't homeless.. it's his job 😂😂

Jami Salisbury · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

We've been doing that with Rich people for years…think Hollywood Tours and small town Christmas Open Houses

shawn bla · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

These shits like to watch poor to feel they are having good life

Plushies TV · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

How is this different from tours in Hollywood or Beverly hills to see rich and famous people houses?

GUUTTEESSBIIEERR · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

dingos??? puking??

December's Very Own · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Whitey being whitey.

StarJada · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

People are being killed on these tours. So any one who is ready to die is welcome to visit teh most poorest and dangerous area.

TechGoggles · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

No wonder jim is scared, nazi jews hate him 😂

Michael Pondo · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Who would anybody want to go to see poor people. We have plenty here in the. U. S. Come visit and s. Spend money looking at poor folks. They all have cell phines though.

Harry Bowman · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Poverty tourism is a ripoff. You can go there much cheaper outside of an organized tour: just show up in that neighborhood yourself.

Fifthelement203 · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Wypepo are disgusting. Smh

Pablo Quijada Salazar · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Poverty tours: Oh let’s go have a look at how the locals are doing since our ancestors fucked up their world so we could be bigger cunts than ever before.

Tony Toft · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

So when are you going to apologize to Avi you twisted scumbag

Bhushan · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

are they really poor or did you edit the video to make them look poor jim?

Michel van der Molen · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

If you go to South Africa, lock yourself up in the wealthy part and pretend the poverty/black people don't excist, that's ignorance, but when you do visit them, it's also wrong, should we just not visit SA then ? And deprive them of those millions… Sounds like a no win solution

Ken Hasibar · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Anyone else notice that there are no fat people there? Americans are disgusting.

greenestmachine71 · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

I’m going to NYC and London later this year and would like to visit some poor and deprived areas – does anyone have some recommendations? I hear that Camden, NJ and Luton, Beds are great! Has anyone been to these places and if so can you recommend a local guide that gives money back to the community.

James · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

I thought Jeffries was cancelled? Looks like he redeemed himself

Drew Minatti · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Do you know what these people could do with $100?

Thabang Melatoe · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

The moment he hit the Roof of the house I knew his never been poor before.

MojoBonzo · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

someone has told me that travelling is the idiot's paradise, and i think this applies in this situation perfectly…

Mossy horn Hunter · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Did you bring your Muhammad artwork to show off ?

Solly Mola themuffinman89 · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Loved this

Viren vs · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Ahh. The old "make people feel good about their lives" tours.

Sebastian Vettel · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Atleast when I go holidaying I won't have to do this since I grew up in the townships

chellebelle914 · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Fucking white people…

(Obviously not ALL white people, don't @ me)

Kimberly W · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Only humans

TommyTom · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

I live pretty close to that area. Inequality in this country is off the charts. I got robbed in a similar place, just down the road. It was where I usually used to buy weed, but the guy tricked me 😛

Torbjörn Lekberg · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

There was somthing similar here in Sweden during the 1600:s, and quite probably in other countries as well. The nobility would go down and walk into poor people homes, especialy if they had vistors from idealized nations such as France, to amuse themselves over how "dumb and superticious" the peasants were.

But, Jim, you cant get a cold sharing a drink of alcohol. It kills the bacteria.

Leander Varma · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

Happens in every developing country . Mumbai slums are not famous for being slums it's a good thing for tourism. Western people are all the same it's either pity or pure hate.

Bliss Dubbs · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

I’m glad he mentioned Anthony Bourdain. I love’em both

The AJ · June 12, 2019 at 10:37 am

I sincerely hope that every one of these tourists get mugged and beaten up.
You know… authentic experiences?
