Who in their right mind would want to immigrate there?

Keith Wood · July 31, 2019 at 3:34 am

Ana, insulin was discovered in 1924 & the doctors that discovered it sold the patent to the university for $1 because they knew it needed to get to every body, so how long does it take Big Pharma recoup $1, it has been 95 years since the discovery even at a penny a year they must be close & they have payed zero dollars in its discovery…

Getta Petta · July 31, 2019 at 3:41 am

The next thing you know they’re all taking your money so they can fill their jets with little kids or trafficked young girls for pedophile express trips to the island! It’s infuriating!

Tracey Stark · July 31, 2019 at 3:42 am

I had asthma medicine that cost $28 in France (uninsured) that would have cost me $310 in the US. That’s one reason I have not returned to the US — it’s an overpriced third world country.

Getta Petta · July 31, 2019 at 3:42 am

In October my dog had a seizure when we rushed to the vet and when they told us it was her blood sugar and she would need insulin I thought we have to put her down right there. Nope! The dogs insulin was only $36!!! WTAF?

marc bell · July 31, 2019 at 3:42 am

There is an inherent, deep seated conflict between commerce and healthcare. This ever widening gap has shown itself to be immune from compassion. Bernie is correct. We must legislate morality. In China the government decides whether you have been a good citizen. In the US it will be boards of medical ethicists. Ah hell, let WATSON decide.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>BAD GOOGLE. "ethicists". is just a fine word. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

BI K · July 31, 2019 at 3:44 am

In Sweden insulin is free of charge since it’s something you can’t live without if you’re a diabetic.

The United States cannot expect Canada to be its pharmacy forever. There are drug shortages in Canada too.

Any politician not getting behind these common sense efforts to help the people, is corporate whore scum! And the people supporting them are either greedy pig stock holders of these corporations, or really self- destructively stupid! Time for change!

My oldest son has type 1 Diabetes. My niece has Cystic Fibrosis, and has now also developed type II Diabetes. Children born with these pre-dispositions should not be denied the medications they need to survive. That's just inhumane. Everybody should be afforded the right to live.

AquaStar · July 31, 2019 at 4:09 am

I went to India in February. I have 13 bone spurs in my lower back and my hips. So the 27 hour total flight really hurt. I bought, over the counter, 10 Tramadol for under $1. Here in the states.. they go for $3 a pill. And with prescription.. but no insurance.. I don't even want to know what they cost. Also, antibiotics like ZPAC is sold over counter there too. For cheap.

I love Grand dad Bernie! His passion, conviction and integrity are 100% real. After two and half years of this tacky, ugly, nauseating "Reality" TV show of a "presidency" having a real, honest, fair and just President in the White House in 2020 will be amazing. Bernie 2020!

Newshound · July 31, 2019 at 4:30 am

How do they live? In Australia if you're a pensioner it costs practically nothing. I think its $5 a script.

Chris Rockey · July 31, 2019 at 4:30 am

Okay clearly we need to be committing more crimes right now. You can get rich selling legal drugs!? We have a criminal president. So why not?

StephBer1 · July 31, 2019 at 4:34 am

You just have to look at the huge profits of drug companies to know that they are screwing over the people.

I live in third world poor country. I met one Crazy American . That American was taking medicine pill here like those medicine were pop corn. He said he have to be millionaire in US to afford those medicine. I didn't believe then now I m thinking he was not exaggerating. We have biggest American Embassy in our city, hope that American Embassy is not manufacturing such kind of "Freedom & Democracy " for corporate in our country.

Will Storm · July 31, 2019 at 4:38 am

In Australia for many 6.60 or free for insulin.

Newshound · July 31, 2019 at 4:39 am

Ideologically the tards see universal health care as "communism". But its also about human rights. Everyone has a right to live. Basic health care shouldn't be unattainable in a rich country purely because of cost. You're on your own on this one America. No one else dies this. Even a lot of third world countries provide free or very cheap health care. Our lives shouldn't be for profit commodities in a moral and decent society. But under your system, they are.

Jeroen Peetoom · July 31, 2019 at 4:54 am

340 dollars for a vial is pure theft and murder.
In the Netherlands a vial costs around 8 euros(9 dollars). And it's covered by health insurance! I can't even imagine living in a country this broken.

The AJ · July 31, 2019 at 4:59 am

I've often heard from conservatives that the US "is a republic, not a democracy". While the two are not mutually exclusive, everything points to the fact that America is indeed an oligarchy ruled by the wealthy and corporate interests.

For the people, by the people, of the people… My ass.

TheChiefEng · July 31, 2019 at 5:06 am

And USA is the greatest country on the planet, right?
USA is more like the most pathetic 3rd world country in the western world.
To republicans, having access to cheap life saving drugs is apparently communism (simply because republicans don't have a clue about what communism actually is), which means that it is communism for citizens to get access to life saving medicine without having to go bankrupt.
One thing anyone can clearly understand from this clip is that USA may be many things but the greatest country on the planet, it is definitely not.

Paul Stobbe · July 31, 2019 at 5:08 am

Fun fact, Insulin discovered by Sir Frederick G Banting, Charles H Best and JJR Maclead at the University of Toronto in 1921. First used in 1922. Public University, not some greedy drug company.

jungle tech music · July 31, 2019 at 5:12 am

This was an incredible gesture for Sanders, not just PR alone. Good for him. C'mon USA vote out the corporate capitalists, we need real people in the govt, so the govt can do its job properly and regulate the corporations

brasschick42 · July 31, 2019 at 5:13 am

The US public is paying in blood for the drug company greed. I am an Australian Doctor and this is worse than some 3rd world countries. In Australia $40.30 per script (month) for non-concession card holders and $6.50 per script/ month for concession card holders. This is based on per script not what drug it is, although of patent/generic drugs can be sold cheaper. It just puts a ceiling on what we pay. One script can supply 5 vials.

Plus safety net-
On 1 January 2019, the Safety Net thresholds changed from $384.00 to $390.00 (for concession card holders) and from $1,521.80 to $1,550.70 (for all other patients). These increases include the usual annual CPI indexation. A similar increase has occurred each year for four years (commencing in 2006).

The same general or concessional Safety Net threshold is applied to a family unit regardless of whether the unit consists of an individual, a couple or a family with dependent children. To be included in the same Safety Net family, the partners of a couple may be married or de facto, and of the same or opposite sex. A couple must be living together on a permanent basis, unless living separately due to illness.

After reaching the Safety Net threshold, general patients pay for further PBS prescriptions at the concessional co-payment rate and concession card holders are dispensed PBS prescriptions at no further charge for the remainder of that calendar year. In order to access the Safety Net arrangements, you need to maintain records of your PBS expenditure on a Prescription Record Form (PRF). These are available from all pharmacies. The value of the actual co-payment paid will be recorded on your PRF, that is, the general or concessional co-payment amount and, from 1 January 2016, less any allowable discount, up to a maximum of $1.00.

A Safety Net Entitlement card or Safety Net Concession Card can be issued by the pharmacist once the threshold is reached.

CN NC · July 31, 2019 at 5:46 am

I'm on a medication that used to cost $1200 per mo 10yrs ago. Today it costs $11k per mo. The cost increase was to cover R&D right? On top of that my insurance just changed a copay assist policy that has screwed me from being able to continue taking this med. I take it once per week and have now missed 4 weeks trying to figure something out. I won't die tomorrow but my life is going to become extremely painful and include future surgeries that could be avoided with this medication. Our medical system is working perfectly for the billion dollar drug companies.

Healthcare and medicine is a human right here in Canada, Not a privilege. Americans have no idea just how bad they have it when it comes to healthcare and medicine. Do yourself a favor america and VOTE Berni Sanders.

bobbytookalook · July 31, 2019 at 6:37 am

So Canada does the 'heavy lifting' in having a universal health care system for 50+ years which includes controlling drug prices.  Some smart Americans realize they can access the benefits of this more enlightened system, while the dummies elect Trump and then turn around an support Tweedle Dumber  — Joe Biden — thinking he will change things!

Don't misunderstand me, I'm happy some of our American cousins were able to get the meds they need — but c;mon America — do you expect this Canadian largesse to last forever?  Get off the pot and elect Bernie before you're stuck with an import tax by Trump or our guys wise up and restrict such access to only Canadians with health services cards, or jack the prices for those without a Canadian issued healthcare card.

Good luck and better health to those who were able to get drugs they needed, I'm certain you'd do the same for us if the situation were reversed.   It isn't that individual Americans are the bad guys.  it's those who fight hard to maintain the status quo, which benefits (hugely) only themselves and their corporate donor buddies.  Come November 2020 do the right thing my American friends — this time vote in favour of your own best interests.

kosys · July 31, 2019 at 6:50 am

Ken Winget · July 31, 2019 at 7:14 am

America has the highest rates of obesity so it may be a good thing. If the government is allowed to control any of it prices will only go up more, has everyone forgotten who is president and that these pharmaceutical companies buy politicians regularly. WAKE UP PEOPLE

Tartiflette · July 31, 2019 at 7:28 am

The bulk of the R&D for medicine is shouldered by universities, ie subsidized by the government and students tuition. Even when you aren't sick you are indirectly giving money to those corporations.

LOVE!!! my healthcare here in Canada! I have a wonderful doctor of over 25 years, have had several surgeries and procedures over the years and never had a problem with quality of care. Maybe I've just been super lucky, but I've always had the best nurses who were very kind and caring and doctors who were very professional, explaining things and making sure I had peace of mind going in. Wait times are quite acceptable as they put more serious surgeries first and I've never had to worry about having to wait too long. Those seem to be made up horror stories pedaled by politicians not wanting Medicare for all for some insane reason. Yes we pay higher taxes, BUT I'd rather pay those taxes and live with a ton of less stress always worrying about health issues. We would have lost our home to bankruptcy and I'm on medication that I could never ever afford in the States. I truly hope Bernie gets this issue resolved for America's sake!

I live in Wales where there are no presciption charges for anyone, but even when there used to be, anyone on a regular drug regime like diabetics were not charged. Corporations don’t have a vote, so why are they allowed to influence elections. Elections are about people. Corporations should only be able to influence elections through their employees, …by perhaps paying them properly. Till now corps influence their employees by paying their health insurance to the extent that these employees become captive to their corporation,..right up to the time those businesses fail or make those people redundant.

Spring Manju · July 31, 2019 at 10:49 am

Bernie is awesome, but why is there so many people diabetic? that is what concerns me. and that should part of the health care question. Other countries who have medicare for all, lower the cost by insuring better food choices to the people. Not doubling the cost of healthy food would allow citizens to have better diet considerations.
I know this is another story , and I am glad Bernie is helping those find cheaper drugs, but lets talk about the food they offer children, the commercials of Happy meals, breakfast cereals laced with glyphosate, as well as there candy, crackers, chips.. and chicken nuggets. We need to look at the bigger picture and I don't see our government doing there job in protecting the citizens of the United States. or the the news media doing there job to end this crisis.

Im from the UK healthcare is considered a basic human right here.the notion that you would pay for it just seems bizarre .its like charging for air

since the foundation of the NHS not 1 Britain has ever gone bankrupt over healthcare costs
the benefits you get from nationalized healthcare fare outweigh the tax costs both as an individual
and for a national economy

Wow, great thing that Bernie did in that trip but so sad to find out those costs for insulin in the States. I'm from Canada, and I have never heard anyone worry about anything like that. $36 bucks vs $340. Plus if you have med benefits through work here they usually cover like 80% of that, so it would be like 5 bucks a vial in that case. I'm pretty sure lower income families have programs where you don't pay anything for it, too.
