Putting Rings Into a Traveler's Notebook

Published by Darron Toy on

hey guys it's Gary from dispatches from the frat house so I did a thing um I posted the Sun to Instagram a little bit ago and I think some people were actually irritated like post that without posting a video like I know it's our anniversary today and this just came in the mail today so I put it together really quickly and then we left because we were going out for dinner for our anniversary but now we're back I have a little bit of light left so hopefully the Lighting's aren't too bad but um well there are rings in there this is a chic Sparrow deluxe Odyssey Hera it's a b6 slim sized and those are 24 millimeter rings so I will show you how I got them in there let me pull out a couple of things cuz I have the debit card driver's license and insurance cards I'm just gonna empty the whole thing how's that let's just empty the whole thing superfast okay so the reason why I did this was first of all I saw somebody's post in the chic Sparrow Facebook group I don't know she wants me to say her name so I won't but if you're in the she expose did a picture of this and I did tagged her in the post and she said she actually got the idea from somebody else even yet so this is not an original idea of mine okay I did not come up with this idea by myself I saw her post I also knew that coming up with school starting we have a couple of big things that just changed for us mm and I kind of felt the need for a little while like I've always told you guys I usually have one you know ring bound either my Malden or my band respect on my desk and there's stuff that just stays in there all the time it stays in the Rings and then I have my everyday carry and you guys know that's usually like a pocket size or an a6 size traveler's notebook usually you know from chic Sparrow and I will you know occasionally go into like a personal size but generally pocket for the most part sometimes in a6 everyone's around personal so I saw her post so like I said this is not my idea okay you guys this was an idea that I got from someone in the Facebook group um but if you guys want to take a look at this first of all look at this thing holy cow I wish the lighting was better so you could kind of see like the wrinkles are amazing there oh there you can see some of them they do come up into here but they're not showing up as well up there but down in here you can really see him so not the best lighting because the Sun is all the way at the front of the house now but here's what I did I had a finder that I found at a local thrift store that I grabbed and at the time I honestly grabbed it hoping that I could take the rings out of it in case I ever needed a spare set of rings that was the only reason I grabbed it I think it was two dollars or something like that that binder itself like the the outer pieces was it was an old like day timer and it was very very very old it had been very well-loved so it wasn't what I was gonna use except for I wanted to salvage the Rings now these I will admit I do want to replace unless I can fix this we gab do you have a little gap in there so here's what I did and I'm telling you what just to show you guys like these puppies do not wobble at all they're not giving and I can't even like pull them away from the leather okay I did not punch the leather you can see that on the outside I didn't put any holes in it I left everything I didn't take anything apart in the notebook at all okay but I will show you what I did and then hopefully I can get it put back together the way see if I can get a hold of it it's kind of fiddly I will freely admit it is a bit fiddly but once you get it in there I'll tell you what it's really in there okay so all I did as you are looking at your notebook like so you can see the back piece of the the Rings from when I took it out of the other binder I really should have taken this out before I started the camera enough okay so yeah see I did not do the best job of taking them apart but I literally just cut them out of the old binder because they it was not one I was going to keep so if you and see how much it's pulling on these two inner elastics you'll see why so first let's even those out a little bit okay so if I am looking at the elastics looking down at the book as from left to right one two three and four okay the first thing I did was opened the Rings and put them underneath elastics number two and three okay leave these two number one and number four the two outer ones just let them be for now so I open up the Rings and just kind of and it's fiddly I'm not gonna tell you it's not because it is once you get it in there it's fine but it is fiddly getting it set up then again maybe that's just me so there's elastic number three inside the Rings there's elastic number two inside the Rings okay and then I just kind of pulled them apart that's probably too far apart so they sit underneath that tab a little bit can you see that Italy and then on this side I need this one on this side and this one to sit up under here maybe okay so that was the first thing I did so elastics number two and three I laid them inside the Rings and then I kind of shimmy them up underneath the edges of the tabs here okay then I took elastic number one sorry close the Rings just because it's easier it doesn't matter if you leave them open except for when you're pulling this over it when I did it wanted to catch on so I just closed them to stop it from catching I just kind of held the Rings down and I crossed this over the top over all the Rings like so then I took elastic number four cross that over the top like so okay now I did fiddle a little bit with like pulling these elastics up these bits and trying to get them tucked into here it worked out right but I found it wasn't necessary because again I they're not they're not moving they don't wiggle up and down for me they're not with one side to side for me they are really really in there so that's it you guys that is all I did again not my idea I do not want to take credit for coming up with us because I totally did not come up with this idea in fact I tried a little while ago to put rings inside of a sheiks barrel first of all I didn't have the right size I was just fiddling around to see if I could even make it work and I could not make any of it work I'm not good at coming up with stuff like this by myself so totally not my idea um if I do find the link to because I the person whose idea who did this who I saw it was a comment on someone else's post I'll see what I can do to get stuff down in the description because I didn't ask her if I could say her name or anything so I don't I don't want to do that without without asking first so that's it you guys let me know if you try it like I said this is a b6 slim I am gonna try it in a regular b6 um I do also have a set of 30-millimeter rings on their way so I thought I might try to put those in a b6 I kind of have the feeling they're still gonna be too big this isn't a b6 Lim I'm gonna record a setup video for you actually right now before my battery runs out so that you guys can see when this is closed well some of my tabs do stick out of it I kinda like I like that kind of full look but if you're throwing 24 millimeter rings inside of a standard b6 instead of a b6 slim you should be able to get away with it okay let me know if you guys try this I would love to see okay thanks so much buh bye

I'm intrigued. I have a Roterfaden Taschenbegleiter. It's very much the same idea as a TN, but instead of elastics, it has clips to hold in notebooks. I'm in love with the gorgeous buttery leather, the flexibility, the look, feel, smell, but … I'm a ring person. I might can do something like this. Or buy a Chic Sparrow. I want rings and soft buttery leather that's not stiff like a true Filofax.

Erica McCrea · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

I know this video is older, but thank you so much for this. Until now I had thought Iโ€™d need to punch the leather! As a leftie and someone with hand tremors, I need a flat surface to write on. Iโ€™ve always wanted a Chic Sparrow TN, but when I tried a TN style notebook for the first time, I couldnโ€™t write on the uneven pages. Problem solved. Time to go butcher a binder!

Jade Bao Song · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

So if I have personal 30mm rings, what TN size should I use??

Scrapdillyishious · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

I want both in the same planner…:)
I once saw a gal who had a HYBRID one with rings AND one TN string on each side. THIS is what I want to do… but am scared to try it in case I ruin it. You're brilliant, and I love your videos!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Pamela Travis · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

4 minutes before you show us how to put rings in??? half the video is just nothing

Danni Lawrence · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

Does anyone know which TN size would be best for Filofax pocket sized inserts? I was thinking an A6 but I donโ€™t know?

Sammy J · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

Woohoo. I wanted rings. I have an A5 CS. I'm so excited. Found the ring mechanisms I purchased and just put it in my pocket. Love it.

Lakhena Im · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

Have you tried putting 30mm ring sin a Chic Sparrow B6? Will I be able to use B6 sizes or will have I have go down to personal size?

Sharon Bennett · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

Hi Cari, Will these rings fit in an A5 TN?

How to Get Your Shit Together · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

Happy anniversary! And oh my goodness this is so versatile! Love!

Addie Belle and Co. · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

Are these personal size rings? Where did you buy them? I want some bigger rings for my gillio.

TheJournalCEO · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

I've got to try this sometime! I've been loving little TNs lately. And, happy anniversary.

It now means I can bring my 3 planner loves together – DIY FIsh, Chic Sparrow , and rings!. I am one VERY happy lady. xxxxx

I'd like to take the rings out of the malden but don't want to ruin it.

nique grigsby · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

Great idea! Thanks for the great video!!!

lachimiste1 · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

So the notebook cover is B6 slim; what size is the paper held in the rings? Personal?

solecreate · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

I love rings so this is cool! Great video ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ’•

Stacey Noack · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

Thanks for the video. Might just have to try it you always have fun videos to watch. Happy Anniversary ๐ŸŽ‰

Grace's World · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

That is so cool happy anniversary to you and Mr Carie

Melanie Nelson · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

I think the gappy ring that you have is the same one you use to open the whole thing. It might get better if you use the top and bottom levers to open them ๐Ÿ˜€

Belinda Prescott · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

Dang, I had a set of rings that I took out of a notebook, but ended up tossing them because I just couldn't find a use for them……

Sam Alderson · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

I think I might have to give this a go with a personal size! What size inserts are you using in this still b6? or did you put in personal size? Thanks so much for the inspiration!

J L Jones · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

Happy Anniversary dear lady!! Thank you for sharing!!!

sass9507 Shwa Lewi · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

TalesFromAPolkCountyGirl · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

Happy anniversary!

Peggy Coffey · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

I hate the rings, I could never do that to my TNs. But good job.

REEIBW E · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

O M G …. I had no idea it would be so easy and was waiting for the drill/screwdriver to come out. what a FABULOUS idea. any thoughts from CS ?!

Joe R · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

I just love this! I've had rings I'm my wide chic sparrow for almost a year and with consistent use it is still holding up nicely! Thanks for sharing!

Selene M. Bowlby · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

I think it was my video and/or pics that you saw, but I got the idea from someone else in the FB group who came up with it first. I posted the video / pics in the CS Fans and Tiny groups on FB, as well as public on my Instagram account. I had been searching for a way to do this for so long, but it was so hard to find, lol. So I had to share it with as many people as possible once I was finally able to do it myself. Total game changer! Rings AND Chic Sparrow!?!?! Yes please!!! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Nancy May · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

Happy Anniversary! Hope you had a great day! Thanks for taking time to do the video. ๐Ÿ˜€

Mikia Cotter · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

I saw the same posts…there is a Pemberly B6 slim in my future. I just got my malden in July so better wait a bit, LOL

Kendra Bork · July 26, 2019 at 11:51 am

I actually have that post saved on Facebook. I was going to link her video here for you, but it looks like it was uploaded to Facebook and not YouTube. ๐Ÿ™‚ This is such a great idea! Now I just need to get a B6 notebook since I just have been using personal and pocket up until now.
