Charlie's gonna dig this

Michael d'Oliveira · May 30, 2019 at 4:17 pm

So many are songs are just words smashed together. Neil Diamond actually tells a story.

Reminds me of deep eastern Kentucky and Baptist tent revivals, I went there in the summers when I visited my Grandma. Life sent me all over the world where I partied with movie stars and sailed the oceans but what brings me peace and calm? Those simple times, good music and memories of family.

As a native Valley Girl who vividly remembers the summer of 1969, when everything changed in L.A., these lyrics foretold the future:

"Starting soft and slow
, like a small earthquake

And when he lets go
, half the valley shakes…"

Armaan R · May 30, 2019 at 4:17 pm

Line……Cut!!!!!!

I know the song is about southern tent revivals but in the context of the OUATIH trailer it comes off as an interesting critique of hippie religious movements. Eerily, it describes Manson to a T – especially with the 'when he lets go/half the valley shakes' line. Not only that, but this single was released in January '69 so it's almost creepy how prescient this song was. It's another weird example of the cultural collective unconscious having a bit of foresight into radically altering events. Like how people say certain movies/songs/tv shows predicted 9/11 and shit. Or maybe I'm crazy and reading too much into it lol. Good song though.

Tarantino is the master of twisting popular music in his movies. Cannot wait to see this film, and the Manson angle is already freaking me out:

Room gets suddenly still and when you'd almost bet

You could hear yourself sweat he walks in

Eyes black as coal and when he lifts his face

Every ear in the place is on him

Startin' soft and slow like a small earthquake

And when he lets go half the valley shakes

HALF THE VALLEY SHAKES.

For anyone interested, the Neil Young song Revolution Blues is a frightening one about Manson "I see bloody fountains and ten million dune buggies coming down the Mountain / Well I hear the Laurel Canyon is full of famous stars, but I hate them worse than lepers, and I'll kill them in their cars" Apparently Neil Young was on the Manson hit list.

And another truly freaky song by Death Grips with the Manson intro. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qxa91EwFco

Hot August night
And the leaves hanging down
And the grass on the ground smelling sweet
Move up the road
To the outside of town
And the sound of that good gospel beat
Sits a ragged tent
Where there ain't no trees
And that gospel group
Telling you and me
It's love, Brother Love say
Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show
Pack up the babies
And grab the old ladies
And everyone goes
'Cause everyone knows
Brother Love's show
Room gets suddenly still
And when you'd almost bet
You could hear yourself sweat, he walks in
Eyes black as coal
And when he lifts his face
Every ear in the place is on him
Starting soft and slow
Like a small earthquake
And when he lets go
Half the valley shakes
It's love, Brother Love say
Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show
Pack up the babies
And grab the old ladies
And everyone goes
'Cause everyone knows
'Bout Brother Love's show
Hallelujah, brothers
Halle-hallelujah
I said brothers
(Hallelujah) Now you got yourself two good hands
(Halle-hallelujah) And when your brother is troubled,
You gotta reach out your one hand for him
(Hallelujah) 'Cause that's what it's there for
(Halle-hallelujah) And when your heart is troubled,
You gotta reach out your other hand
(Hallelujah) Reach it out to the man up there
(Halle-hallelujah) 'Cause that's what he's there for
Take my hand in yours
Walk with me this day
In my heart I know
I will never stray
Halle, halle, halle, halle, halle, halle, halle, halle
Love, Brother Love say
Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show
Pack up the babies
And grab the old ladies
And everyone goes
I say love, Brother Love say
Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show
(Halle, halle)
Pack up the babies
And grab the old ladies
And everyone goes
Love, Brother Love say
Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show

My earliest memories, my mom holding me with one arm, vacuum in the other hand and neil diamond blasting on our old classic floor unit that played vinyl and 8-track.. nothing but amazing memories

Kiran Patil · May 30, 2019 at 4:17 pm

I can't thank Quentin Tarantino enough. This song is pure gold !
