National Park Road Trip Costs | Gas, Repairs & Highlights

Published by Darron Toy on

What’s going? Tow Truck. A tow truck. Yeah. Why? Breaking car. The car is broken? Yeah. Oh, that’s a big bummer. [Laughter] [Music] Hi, I’m Alexandra. And I’m Evan. And we are Within Hiking Distance. From the end of August 2017 to the beginning of March 2019 we been on an epic 18-month road trip traveling around the western
United States visiting National Parks, Monuments, and State Parks. We wanted to share our experience so that if you’re thinking about doing a road trip you might want to know what where the gas prices in the different states, and the kind of repairs we did on our car,
as well as the highlights. Let’s do it! We drove a 2002 Lexus RX300 during our road trip. When we started our travels
the car had almost 160,000 miles on it so it had already had a high mileage. We also came up with some interesting analyses and insights from our travels. During our road trip we drove 28,775 miles. If you think about it, the circumference of the earth is 24,901 miles. So we actually drove more than around the globe. From the 28,775 miles that we drove, we used 1,519 gallons of gas,
for a total of $4,418. The average price of gas during our trip was $2.91. We spent 18 months traveling 11 states in the Western US.
We spent an average of 1-4 months in each of them We were able to collect a lot of
useful data on gas and other travel expenses along the way. [Music] During our 18-month road trip we found out the least expense states for gas were
New Mexico, Idaho, and Arizona. New Mexico had an average price per gallon of $2.15. Idaho had an average price per gallon of $2.50. And Arizona had an average price per gallon of $2.54. For the most expensive states for gas in the Western US, California came in at #1 with $3.52. Then Washington State had an average price per gallon of $3.14. Nevada and Oregon tied for third with an average price per gallon. When I did my calculations, there was only a difference in 1/10 of one cent. Their price per gallon was $2.90. Here’s a view of our chart with all the western US states ranked from least expensive most expensive. Montana, Utah, and Colorado are right in the middle with the average price of gas
ranging from $2.63 cents to $2.86 cents. The only state where we do not have
enough data for this ranking was Wyoming. We only filled up once and that was in Yellowstone National Park. The duration in which we moved from place to place was between one night and one month, with an average day of 1-2 weeks. We would try not to drive more than 4 hours between destinations. But there were a couple times we drove nine hours between spots. During our travels we never got a speeding ticket. But we did encounter some car issues. [Music] In Moab, in November 2017, we had an exhaust leak where we had to have the pipe fixed. In April 2018, we had an oil leak in Oceanside California where we needed to have some pipes replaced. Then, we ran into larger issues. In Moab again, in October 2018, we had a front wheel that came loose while driving and we had to have the car towed to get it fixed. The last and biggest issue that we had
was when our transmission blew out when arriving in Zion National Park in January 2019. It took almost two weeks to get it fixed. In the meantime we rented a car and kept on traveling until we got the car back. During our 18 month road trip we spent almost $2,000 on car maintenance, which includes oil changes, wheel alignments and rotations, filters, transmission fluid, and a new set of tires. Car expenses over our 18-month road trip included $5,750 in major repairs. $4,418 in gas. $2,000 in regular maintenance, which gives a grand total of $12,168. We still have the Lexus RX300 and it hasn’t given us any issues since we had the transmission replaced, so hopefully it will still last a long time. It is coming up on 200,000 miles. [Music] Our trip was full of highlights. Here’s our top five. Number one. Seeing wildlife from the comfort of your seat. We saw Elk in Grand Canyon, Bison in Yellowstone, Bears in Sequoia, and Desert Bighorn Sheep in Colorado National Monument. Another major highlight while driving in our car was
driving over the Golden Gate Bridge. This suspension bridge is one mile long and one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco. Number 3. Driving through a log in Sequoia National Park. That was a really cool experience and we had to drive slowly just to make sure that the car could fit under the Sequoia. The fourth highlight from our road trip is driving through the iconic Monument Valley. Which includes the Valley Drive and Forrest Gump Point. The Valley Drive is a 17-mile dirt road loop within Monument Valley that passes by many of the valley’s iconic landmarks. We really enjoyed exploring Forrest Gump Point. We even got out of the car to recreate the movie scene itself. Number 5. Driving through Redwood Forests. We drove through Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park and Avenue of the Giants in
Northern California and seeing those amazing trees was absolutely fantastic. We hope you find this video useful and if you have any questions let us know in the comments below. And if you like this video, give it a thumbs up, share with your friends and family, and don’t forget to subscribe to our channel. Okay. Video thumbs up. Video thumbs up. Boing.

Broken car! That is a big bummer! Wow, you guys did a lot of driving๐Ÿ˜ฎ! When we had our family trip in New Mexico my dad told me that he got more and more angry as they got farther from California! He hadnโ€™t realized how expensive gas was! It seems that Utah was bad luck for your car! All worth it though, Iโ€™m sure! You guys have seen the best of the west! Thumbs up, Little Man!๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค—

Well, being from California we made your chart for most expensive gas, boo, plus a couple of your highlights, yeah. LOL. Still trying to figure out why gas in California is more expensive then our surrounding states. Anyways great video on expenses and what to expect and plan for when setting out on a long term road trip. Over 28k miles, thats amazing. Great video you three.

28,775 – now that is some mileage, especially for someone like me, as I hate driving. A road trip like that, is a great memory. Got to say the price of gas is real cheap over there so a massive bonus for all your travelling. $2K on repairs is a bummer but I suppose for the mileage it had done it had done OK. Great top five highlights and memories to last a lifetime, cheers Alan
