London’s Worst Tourist Traps (AVOID!)

Published by Darron Toy on

(upbeat music) – If you’re not into losing
money on pointless crap, then, I’m gonna tell you the tourist traps that you need to avoid when
you’re visiting London. By the way, if you’re new, here, I’m Jess and I make videos for people
who are coming to visit London and I promise they’re
hugely a lot more positive than this one. So, Leicester Square is pretty much where good taste goes
to die, in my opinion. It’s lined with a bunch of
the U.K.’s worst food chains, selling food that’s not good and also 15 times the
price that is should be. There’s also M&M Worlds, here, and I don’t know why
anyone would come to London and go to M&M World. It has nothing to do
with London or the U.K. (upbeat music) Lots of people come to London and want to experience traditional U.K. food, which, pubs are the best
place to do that at, but, some of the pubs around
the most touristy areas of London are not very good. They’re overpriced and the food is really not very good at all. So, how to spot those
places is if they have the words authentic and traditional plastered
all over the place. It’s kind of one of those things that if you have to say it,
it’s not actually true. If you want a really nice
pub with really good food, I would suggest venturing out of the most touristy areas in Central London, somewhere of the neighborhood-y areas like Notting Hill or Hackney and you’ll find lots of great
neighborhood pubs, there. In some touristy areas
of London you will see these rickshaws that you can get. They used to not be regulated, so, what would happen was people
would get into the rickshaw, go for a 10 minute ride and then, the driver would demand
a huge sum of money at the end of the ride. I think they’re more regulated, now, so, that doesn’t usually happen, however, you just really
look like a silly tourist when you get into one of those and they’re still very expensive, so, avoid going in one of those. Near almost all of the
major tourist attractions are these huge souvenir
shops that are just filled with frankly, crap that’s made
in China and will fall apart on you in just two months, so instead, I would
recommend going to a place like We Built This City, which is an alternative souvenir shop and they source all their
items from local artists. You could also go to
maybe a department store and get some tea or you
could do some shopping while you’re here, and pick out something that you’ll wear for years to come and think about your London trip. (upbeat music) Okay, we’re in Notting Hill, now, and there’s a souvenir shop, here, that looks very similar to the bookshop that’s in the movie Notting Hill. It even named itself with the same name, but, it actually has absolutely
nothing to do with the movie and rather, around the
corner, is the site of where the bookshop that did
inspire the movie was, however, the original owners
closed it down in 2011 and then, was bought by a company and they didn’t actually
even film the movie in the bookshop, so, that’s
just a heads-up for ya. (upbeat music) Now, London has a lot of
legitamit street performers, many of which had to audition to be able to busk in the area that they’re in, but, every once and a while, you’ll run across these
guys that are dressed up as cheesy characters or
painted as lifelike statues and then, when you go up to
take a picture with them, they yell at you after that
you have to give them money, so, just avoid taking pictures
with any of these guys unless you want to get yelled at. There are a few cafes and
food spots around London that have become very popular pretty much just because they make for
a very good Instagram photo, but, the truth is that
some of these places are one, either very expensive, or they’re just have pretty
substandard food or drinks and they’re not actually very special. So, this place behind me is an example. It’s called Peggy Porschen and you can almost anytime od
the day find people quing up just to take a photo in front of the door or to sit down and take some
photos of some cute cupcakes, but, it’s kind of a pretty standard place and it’s pretty expensive. Okay, next up, I think that
you should watch my video about the tourist attractions that I think are totally overrated and you can do that by clicking the box that’s popping up right below me. (alert notification)
In your shop here, that looks like it was. (alert notification)
To shop here, that tried. Okay, like a huge sum of mummy. Mummy. (laugh)

I just moved to London this morning from Canada, and have been bingewatching your videos. SO HELPFUL, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

Umut Esmer · April 21, 2019 at 7:28 am

The thing is, a Londoner wouldn’t even know those places…

Indira Edwards · April 21, 2019 at 7:34 am

I don’t find Peggy Porschen to be any more expensive than any other cupcake shop (especially as compared to one the shops in NYC), and I actually liked my cupcake 🙂

pizza hut double the price. kinda agree, used to be £17 for BOGOF byt now its over £22,

Scams are similar all over the world whether it's the western or asian countries .Is there any country that does not have these annoying tourist scammers?

Kjelly Lund · April 22, 2019 at 9:56 am

If you want to do some shopping, then go to one of the big malls outside the city centre. The prices there are much better, and you also find pretty much anything you need. Brent Cross shopping centre is one of them. And 20 minutes from that shopping centre you will discover the RAF Museum, it is a free museum with aeroplanes from Raf history ranging 100 years. It is a fascinating museum and not that crowded. I highly recommend it.

Myrna. Online · April 22, 2019 at 9:12 pm

Have you ever been to the london outlet center? (At wembley). Is it worth a visit??

Sharon Owen · April 23, 2019 at 12:50 am

Everyone should avoid cafe concerto. Cakes looks amazing in the shop window but it’s overpriced and they microwaved my scone!! And their macaroons were served frozen… never again.

Neil Hayes · April 23, 2019 at 12:04 pm

Some good calls here, especially with regard to the tourist traps in Leicester Square. Only thing I would disagree with is, that when in Central London, you will find some great and reasonably priced pubs down the backstreets. It is an expensive city I’m afraid, so do be prepared to get a hit on your wallet. For a more peaceful wallet friendly holiday I recommend Durham/ Northumberland.

Dana · April 24, 2019 at 2:53 pm

I’ve lived in London for about a year now and the only good places in the Leicester Square area are the Prince Charles Cinema and some of the restaurants in Chinatown, if they were anywhere else I wouldn’t go near it! Tourist barf hahah

Big Fat Besty · April 24, 2019 at 10:13 pm

Great Info. But is this in London? It looks green screen and b – roll.

Slackii72 · April 25, 2019 at 1:21 pm

Golden Union fish shop in Poland St is amazing, albeit pricey but you don't get cheap in London. Saying that, Cookhouse Joe Berwick St is also a decent place for lunch.

One of my best travel tip is no Mather where in the world you go for the best food is alway go out of the tourist place, which the local uses, if it busy then must be good

Inis CH · April 27, 2019 at 5:35 pm

Tbh I don't know how to explain the obsession with m&ms word but we Spanish people are attracted to it like flies to light. Actually I lived in London for 8 months and I went there from time to time as if I needed to be scammed so bad haha

Andrei Maghiar · April 27, 2019 at 7:05 pm

i live in London for the past 5 yrs and this is the best advice you can get ! Totally agree! if you want good things don't go central go almost zone 2

Jack Sugden · April 27, 2019 at 8:54 pm

Best cod fish and chips for me can be bought at either Cockfosters or at a shop near Brentwood Station on Warley Hill, there are three on Essex Road in Islington, one was almost good value for money, a question of knowing where to look around.

SARA · April 27, 2019 at 10:49 pm

This came up in my recommendations and can I say I was born and raised in London and everything she said was the truth lol

R. T. · April 28, 2019 at 7:46 am

I think these tips apply to pretty much every major city. Get out of the central areas if you want to eat authentic food and experience real culture.

TheAlbanach_ · April 28, 2019 at 3:58 pm

Visit London every month or two and all of what you said is spot on! Although, Leicester Square is good for one thing, if you're there Chinatown is next to it and has amazing places to eat! 😀

KonPlayz · April 29, 2019 at 9:27 am

why am i watching this after going to london

Zuul Gatekeeper · April 29, 2019 at 12:41 pm

Applies to many city's as well as London don't fall for table scam, private bars with dancing girls will entice you in written in the small print on the menu or on the wall is you're buying the table for the evening when you leave thinking you have only spent a few $ on drinks you get a bill for the rental of the table it can be hundreds & you have to pay it.

The The · April 29, 2019 at 1:42 pm

Be good if you recommended some more good places to balance it out.
The Bear and staff pub, bear street, is cool with good food. Bar Remo just beside Karen Millen off, Regent street and China town, Gerard street are good value to eat out. also. Covent Garden market, British Museum, St. Paul’s church Covent Garden for the live quire , are all worth a visit or stroll round👍

Philip Lettley · April 30, 2019 at 5:27 pm

Remember shopping on Oxford Street, for lunch we went into Mayfair, small pub, very cheaply priced and good food, for anywhere not just for London, so agree with going well off the main attractions for cheap good food. And like with Mayfair, go into the expensive areas, as you'll probably find it cheaper there

Orcas Waling · April 30, 2019 at 7:02 pm

Proper Fish & Chips with Mushy Peas should be no more that £6.50..and if you are paying that, ask for the batter bits too… Nice Lady Though

Apple Bebe Rozas-Lipman · April 30, 2019 at 9:52 pm

In terms of pubs, I suggest go to the areas of London that are filled with office workers and English people. Those are the more authentic ones. There are some around the Strand in Alleys. A good Pub is 'Ye Old Cheshire Cheese' which is in Fleet Street.

Misk · May 1, 2019 at 5:36 pm

There a loads of great pubs in central London. Just a bit of research will tell you which ones to visit and which ones to avoid.

We did like Bella Italia, good service, tasty food, great specials for the budget minded travellers (40% off coupon really helps). Very good cappuccino.

Wrongway Conway · May 5, 2019 at 12:14 pm

Hobson's on Porchester Rd in Bayswater, or Seafresh on Wilton Rd in Victoria. Delicious, plentiful, inexpensive fish & chips (£4.50 – £8).

seventy5iron · May 9, 2019 at 11:36 pm

Not sure why anyone would take a photo of the people dressed up but surely to give them some change isn't a big deal

Correction, there is a reeeeeally nice pizza place in Leicester Square which is called MOD Pizza, they basically do the same thing Subway does- you can make create your own pizza with anything you like for about £7

Roberto C. · June 2, 2019 at 12:17 am

I was hesitant concerning Madame Toussods, but went out totally flashed. Loved the short immersive parts and am sad not to have went for the Sherlock thing. That short part I went through was cool though. and the 4d cinema was also great. If it only where about taking selfies with wax people it might be weirder. But really like the package it offers atm 😀

Miss highter · June 3, 2019 at 11:59 am

How about Manchester and Liverpool Jess? Have you been there? Any great place to see to eat to stay? Weather? Worst than London?

0:36 a lot of American people I know that come to London often are repeat visitors to the M&M store, they buy huge bags of M&Ms candy to take back to America so that they get the London branded bag, I know Americans that refuse to eat outside of American corporate branded fast food restaurants in the UK and some even fly a mid sized extra suitcase full of food over with them from America, filled with powdered mac and cheese and things like that, even though the same thing is on sale here in a differently branded box.

Grant Rennie · June 22, 2019 at 8:57 am

I spent every weekend for 3 years in London then lived there for a while as well, there are nice restaurants in North Finchley.

Blueband 8 · June 30, 2019 at 10:53 am

The whole of London is not 'traditional'.

Amy Clarke · June 30, 2019 at 7:48 pm

So I had to spend this past week working in and around Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus. Honestly there wasn’t much to do and for a more enjoyable time I’d recommend taking a literally 5 minute walk to st James park. There’s not much to do at LS that isn’t a rip off so I just sat near the Shakespeare fountain in a deck chair and listened to a podcast, it killed time and didn’t cost anything. Don’t bother with tourist food locations like rainforest cafe or hard rock. Just get something cheap and cheerful for example I regularly just went wasbi or mc D’s or pret cause frankly when you just need food you ain’t going to find a nice restaurant in the heart of tourist of London once again just take a 5 minute walk and go somewhere that’s not right next to the pc tube stop.

importedmusic · July 1, 2019 at 6:18 pm

Tirza Alberta · July 2, 2019 at 5:07 am

I have to disagree with the performers in character costumes etc.. I mean to be frank, they're not there as a volunteer.. They're there to work so it's not unreasonable for them to ask for money if you're using their service or performance (photo or video). Now, some really try to rip you off, but just saying, it's not reasonable to expect all of them to let you take pics with them for free since theyre at work. If you don't wanna pay, don't use their service, but don't get mad if they charge you for their time, costume, prep, and performance (even if they just stand there like a statue).

If you are paying £13.75 for fish and chips you are paying almost 3 times the normal price and don't ask for fish & chips, ask for cod or haddock, if you ask for fish they could give you anything and God knows what that might be.

We loved Scoff and Banter as well as Le Pain Quotidian – both local chains that were excellent. Good food at a good price, especially Scoff and Banter which had the feel of an upscale restaurant without the price. We also loved the Waitrose grocery stores. We got amazing sandwiches and all sorts of interesting cookies and snacks to take back to the room. Because I am from New Orleans, I don't go places to eat, but these were all super and very reasonable. I loved W. H. Smith – awesome pens and pencils. Also, don't miss Bow Wow dog shop in Covent Garden.

Regarding the item about authentic pub food: My son and I were in London last month. We stayed at a hotel in Bloomsbury, and we asked the hotel staff about places to eat in the area. They were very helpful in steering us to good places and away from gimmicky ones. In fact, the hotel clerk said about one pub: "Only tourists eat there. You won't find any English people there." So the lesson I learned was when in doubt, ask your hotel for advice. The people who work there are locals, and they know what is authentic and what isn't.
