Journal with Me No.011 | Midori Traveler's Notebook

Published by Darron Toy on

everyone it's joke and I'm back again with another journalist Nevis is the 11th of journal with me on this channel which is so crazy because I feel like I just started this channel and here we are in the double judge judge in the double digits as you can see I'm sticking to this stream-of-consciousness one-take style voiceover I'm not going to edit this I'm just going to keep on going and let's see where this goes because I tend to make so many mistakes but a lot of you actually commented that you like this type of voiceover and it's a lot more casual and I'm glad because saves me a lot of time and I kind of enjoy this because I can be more myself in these voiceovers anyways while I was rambling I basically sorted through a whole bunch of my pamphlets and ephemera that I collected over the trip and I chose a few relevant of summer pieces and I guess receipt ticket stubs that I actually use during that day so we're journaling for January the 15th which shows the Saturday which was the second day of my Hong Kong Taiwan trip I was actually in Hong Kong for this day and yeah let's get started so basically I sifted through a few of my papers my pattern papers earlier through that folder and I chose this kind of grid ledger paper style paper but it's actually not ledger paper it's just um I guess it's kind of like scrap of paper oh that's my frizzy hair anyways and I'm gonna use my signature of what is that called again tearaway calendar sheet which I use in almost all of these journal with me but I really like how it looks in he spreads and it kind of is like an anchor in my spread because it provides some consistency throughout my journal pages but as you can see I kind of put down a few of the elements on the page but I didn't commit to gooing them down because AI wasn't ready and B I wanted to add some paint on the right-hand side of the spread so I'm basically taking this glue and I'm using my aqua brush pen with just some water in it and I'm just haphazardly putting some blue and red paint on the page and I kind of want to make it look distressed without actually using a distress stain because I don't actually have any distress glue that's a hard combination of words distressed stains on hand I only have distress phrase and I guess I wanted to achieve that look but with watercolors and I think it turned out all right and as you can see I've been keeping my new washes in a bowl because I actually don't have any more space in my washi storage boxes on my desk so I've been keeping all the new Taiwan and Hong Kong and Macau washes that I purchased in that bowl which is I guess working out for me all right so I use that red classic e washi tape and put some at the top of the page on the left-hand side and then I took that empty Washakie I think it's empty washi ooh no it's an empty collaboration with Morris & Co who consoled so while I was rambling on about washi tapes I pulled out this post-it with a stamp on it and this is from the Midori meetup back in December and basically there were a whole bunch of Midori travelers notebook stamp there and I just stamped them onto postage so I could use them in future spread and this particular staff has a visit pass there's a little space of a Center for you to use a roller date step to put the date in so it kind of resembles a bus ticket or a plane ticket or some sort of ticket I think it goes well with the theme of life spread now I'm going to pull out this new toy that I have is called the shiny s100 DIY staff kit and it allows you to make your own custom stamp so I have this circle stamp that says job's journal confidential and there's a little blank space of the sector for you to put some sort of element in there I'm going to go in with my racheting type foundry letterpress block and I'm going to stamp my initials in the center but savvy items was enough ink on the stamp so it turned out that great so I'm going to cover it up and I'm going to use my favorite red lash and I'm going to knock some red locks over top of my mistake and I think it's going to turn out pretty cool because there's a lot of red on both pages of the spread so I guess it just ties it all together I'm going to use a reshape type boundary letterpress welcome as my seal down instead of the usual fleur-de-lis seal stuff that I have and you said give that a break because I use it I think a lot of my school and while that's cooling dry I'm going to put a chip in at the bottom of the page I'm just going to fit in that up octopus card is a transit card that I use a Hong Kong everyone uses up there and it's super clean you can use it as convenient storage instead of a credit card or debit card attraction and now I'm going to finally commit and take that tiny to Korea dictionary page off to the right hand side of the spread and I'm gonna actually tape that up tag carry luggage tag on the edge of that page and I think it gives it a really cool look it ends up looking like those of Midori washi tapes that look like luggage tags so this is a real luggage tag and I didn't have to spend money on a new Washington cooking school and I just tipped off the overhanging parts of the luggage tag and now I'm going to finally take those photos down but I actually change the format or the layout of the last minute and I ended up putting that photo of the roasted duck that I had at yet look at the left page and that duck was so good the yacht lock restaurant is actually a one Michelin star restaurant and I highly suggest we visit not luck if you're ever in Hong Kong and then the photo at the top of the right page is actually just a photo of the street near the lost restaurant and I thought it was cool because there are a lot of red signs on the photo and it would I thought it would complement the red if I spread and lastly there's a photo of me holding a cup of coffee and that photo was taken at the cupping room which is an awesome coffee shop in Central Hong Kong you should definitely check it out – it reminds me of the cafe's back in Vancouver and I actually really love the coffee I've got a kicking myself because I didn't end up buying any of the coffee beans because the coffee was really delicious and now I'm adding these two posts it's one inning Marbles posted and the other is actually not a posting it's a it's a plasticy onionskin surfers and those are just going to be places for me to put some journaling and writing onto the spread and finally adhering that last photo down and I'm gonna put a few finishing touches this is a black and craft paper washi tape and then I put that in your photo at the top of the page and then I'm going to use this mask a washi tape which is a coffee themed washi tape and I'm going to put that in here the photos you have in a cup of coffee but honestly I think it was my new favorite Washington because it's so cool and I love coffee so I'm going to get a lot of use out of it but this is the final spread I'm gonna go in and I think take out yeah take out a brush pen this is a big brushable pen and I'm just going to put Hong Kong binky since this thread is all about my second day in Hong Kong and I kept it pretty simple I didn't add any more washing capes even though I really wanted to and I'm just going to go in and do some journaling but honestly I already have a travel journal about this day so the journaling is just going to be very minimal and she's going to be me talking about the photos instead of me going in depth about my page so this is a final spread I think it looks pretty cool it's very photo heavy and ephemeral heavy but I think it ended up looking pretty great it's a very clean spread there's a lot of red which is cool and I was there almost so I was a bad guy glitter interior I'm making this up let me wrap up this voiceover I sound really tired 1 a.m. in the morning right now I should really go to bed but thank you so much for watching please leave a comment if you have any questions about anything and also leave a few quotes down in the comment section below because I want to do a brush lettering process video in the future and I want some cool floats to script out but again thank you so much for watching and I'll see you next time I

I love your videos. They are very therapeutic, I know sounds weird , 😊. I was wondering, ho do you get so many different decorations for the pages? Where do you store all your journaling items. As I'm sure you know, they can get overwhelming large very quickly. Also I love the date squares, where'd you get them? Are they available in the U.S.?

Hi Job, here are some of my favourite quotes:
"Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So love the people who treat you right, forget about the ones who don't. Believe that everything happens for a reason. If you get a chance, take it. If it changes your life, then let it. Nobody said, it'd be easy. They just promised it'd be worth it." – Author Unknown

"Though I am grateful for the blessings of wealth, it hasn't changed who I am. My feet are still on the ground. I'm just wearing better shoes." – Oprah Winfrey

"When in doubt, mumble; when in trouble, delegate; when in charge, ponder." – James H. Boren

PS: The spread looks super! I'm hoping to visit Hong Kong this year. Fingers crossed!

Literary Prints · July 30, 2019 at 2:32 pm

Great video as always!! I love the blue background + how you used a lot of your new supplies from your recent haul! Thank you so much for sharing. 🙂 And hey – if doing more natural voice over saves time/allows you to make more videos more often I'm sure everyone would be 110% okay with that! (*≧▽≦) Oh as for the quote: "Journal writing is a voyage to the interior" has always been one of my personal favourites.

Mintea Leef · July 30, 2019 at 2:32 pm

You're so diligent. How do you find the time??
I always have to do my homework in the evening till my curfew time. 🙁

Taey Ladi · July 30, 2019 at 2:32 pm

nice spread, very aesthetically pleasing

Karla Smith · July 30, 2019 at 2:32 pm

I'm a new subscriber….I'm Karla, so nice to meet you…. Such a nice collection and creative way you journal… I recently received my first Midori Traveler's Notebook and just love that I can utilize each insert whichever way I desire with ease of taking them out to use and get creative. I too collect brochures and ephemera when I'm out and about but now I plan to use them in my journaling (instead of having them stored in boxes)…. Anyway, your video's are inspiring and I enjoy seeing your creative process.

Good day,

newbie230 · July 30, 2019 at 2:32 pm

Letters From Nantucket · July 30, 2019 at 2:32 pm

Another great process video–thank you for sharing, as always! A quote inspired by your recent travels for your lettering process:

"To move, to breathe, to fly, to float,
To gain all while you give,
To roam the roads of lands remote,
To travel is to live."
-Hans Christian Andersen

PS – love the stream of consciousness voice over–you're so friendly and charismatic! 🙂

Hedda Vrolijk · July 30, 2019 at 2:32 pm
