I don't think you'd travel for a breakfast and the pleasure of food if you could achieve this level of technology. You wouldnt eat for sustenance in a surrogate body and if you want to do it for pleasure, you could re-create that same pleasure with electric signal into your clone body or whatever. In the same line of thoughts, why travel all the universe if you can simulate it locally, de facto just everyone becoming brain in vats.

This guy is one of those people who missing forms people about what Consciousness is actually supposed to be….

Consciousness need not necessarily be thoughts or ideas….

Consciousness could be just as basic as what a baby feels like while it drinks milk with no thoughts or ideas in its head do to not knowing language yet.

Consciousness is the fact that it is "Like Something" to be you.

You are made of the same stuff essentially (atoms) as a robot would be… A robots mind would just be following it's programming and so are we… But most people wouldn't expect a robot to ACTUALLY be experiencing something…. It would make more sense to most people to think that from the first person perspective of the robot – that it's just nothingness – in other words the robot SEEMS to be conscious but in reality it isn't "Like Something" to be the robot….and there's no scientifically proven reason that it should be "Like Something" to be a human either… Humans should essentially be 'Zombies' some people think… We should be beings that SEEM conscious but are actually experiencing nothing at all…

See "Sam Harris – David Chalmers – Hard Problem" on YouTube for a more detailed explanation.

The text states, in teenagers, the prefrontal cortex IS fully formed. Huh?!

Woke Spirit · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

This is crazy

Graeme Lastname · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

At the speed of light it's all pretty pointless. By the time you get back your children will be 100,000 years older than you are. πŸ˜‰

Go Drive · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

Maybe conecting the counciousness to a virtual reality, boom matrix πŸ€¨πŸ€”

Go Drive · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

Shooting the conciousness, oh man MATRIX is coming to be true.

Everytime I watch videos by Michio Kaku, I get happy with feeling that humans can still become a intergalactic species….

KingTG · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

I always ask myself and other people if they think we're free to travel the universe after we die. I Hope so. Seems like such a waste of space otherwise

Saido · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

Poor michio kako he will die before all this happens, I feel lucky to be young, future generations are even luckier.

vincent dsouza · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

Talking nonsense.

Terry McCracken · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

Only copies. Quantum copies of us, no more.

Maximilian Roszko · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

Yeahh….. So consciousness isn't something that can exist in a laser beam, obviously. The laser beam itself isn't conscious. But the information required to build the system that can generate a certain kind of conscious being is theoretically possible to be stored in a laser beam (a very very very long laser beam), although it might be practically impossible to store it given the information required to detail out the specs for a specific brain. It's not just how all neurons are wired but also the physical structures of each neuron that are part in deciding whether a signal crosses a synapse, and you need to know genetic information about how these neurons will change dynamically over time from stimulation (to copy a certain "person", like you), and you need to know the proteome to know more details about how the chemical context the neurons operate at that time, and this is still leaving out tons of information needed to actually replicate a specific brain. It's really not efficient to store information about a brain digitally as it's stuck on "one level" of physical reality, while the "information" about the brain as it existing in reality is "stored" at multiple levels of physical reality, making it much much much more spatially and energetically efficient to store.

Just an email ther celed.

Niko Lopez · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

But that's not me. It's a copy of me

Eli Israel · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

uhmm. not to be a buzz kill. but, what happens to the avatar when you leave? whos cleaning up the bodies?

sablin · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

What a load of crap.

Ngura Sailo · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

I've often thought about the concept of travelling far distant places with our mind. Even interdimensional travel. Yeah, I've often thought about this….

Locutus Borg · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

Well you know what they say, if you can't beat the speed of light, join it.

Nos Zodd · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

The prophet has spoken!

Brian W · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

But don’t you need to get a computer and Avatar set up first in galaxy?

Kyle Bolton · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

TELEVISIBLE · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

Money ! No money no travel !

yanti parazi · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

Why limit the speed of our conciousness(es?) to the speed of light with clunky old laser beams when you can use your imagination to travel to the edge of the universe (and beyond) RIGHT NOW?! (In fact I just got done being God about 10 minutes ago…all in all a big headache realizing I made watermelons with way too many seeds)

slikscythe · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

What if something intercepts me when I'm traveling through space and my conciousness is redirected so that I'm traveling at the speed of light towards an empty void… 😟

Anime Aficionado · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

This man,the way he articulates every single topic is beyond any other physicist. I guess there need to be more Michio Kaku episodes here on Big think

deepvybes · July 30, 2019 at 6:58 pm

"Avatar that looks just like you, handsome, strong, beautiful, whatever". Yea that whatever is me
