You could have bought an octopus at the start of the trip and return the octopus back to any mtr station at the end of the trip and you get 50 hkd back

You shouldn't need a sim card. You can download Google Maps for offline use, GPS shouldn't cost you anything and you can use WiFi for anything else you need.

I travel back to HK each year to visit my family. Everything is good. However, the weather is bad!
The only thing in this video is you did not talk about the Octopus pass!

Unfortunately, Having been to HK two times both for one month each visit. I can say that HK is NOT the most expensive place to vacation. Buying property in HK is the expensive thing, the rest is cheap….if you want it to be.
Firstly, upon arriving at HKIA, you should ALWAYS buy an Octopus card. This card has multiple uses including ALL of HK's transport system. It can also be used in many shops/restaurants/ tourist places.
Secondly, HK is a cheap place to eat. Go where the locals go not the super-rich. After all, what does a bowl of rice cost in China? Answer…..not much.
Thirdly, My first visit was an unique experience ranging from 4* hotels down to super cheap rooms. My choice of cheap rooms were the Chung King Mansions. It was an experience…. before I went back to my "regular" 3* hotel overlooking the harbour. Try to check out hotel chains. They do regular "stay 3 days pay for 2 days" this along saved me 1000's of HKD's on my month stay. 24 days staying in hotels became 18 days paying. savings galore.
Finally, HK IS a tax-free shopping zone where you can get excellent cheap quality brand names. It may not be the cheapest in Asia but still worth it over EU//USA prices.

1:03 : You need cash for Hong Kong
No, no you don't… as a local I rarely even touch cash nowadays as I can basically use the Octopus card (metro card) everywhere except restaurants, where you can use a credit card. A useful app in HK is AlipayHK/ Wechat Pay (almost identical) as you can link your credit card to it and get discounts very often when you use the app. The only place I see myself using cash is when I am at super local Chinese restaurants, taxis (which are increasingly accepting credit cards via the use of official taxi-hailing apps) or market stalls/shops.
MAIN TAKEAWAY: Use octopus and AlipayHK/ Wechat Pay

We don’t tip here, it’s just not a thing. But if you really really want to, tell them to keep the change.

SomeNerd Hk · May 30, 2019 at 6:19 pm

Almost everyone knows English. You are either talking to a tourist (lots of Asians) or an elderly (our treasure) if they don’t know English. But just talk to an millennial and most of the time they 80% know how to speak English.

SomeNerd Hk · May 30, 2019 at 6:19 pm

NEVER GO UBER. Never. MTR is cheap and you can almost walk anywhere with the MTR.

SomeNerd Hk · May 30, 2019 at 6:19 pm

Shame you didn’t try the street food, which is the food heaven of HK.

SomeNerd Hk · May 30, 2019 at 6:19 pm

The Airport bus is expensive, go for the Airport express.
