How to Make a Bed Like a Hotel – How to House – HGTV

Published by Darron Toy on

hey guys it's ivy from how to house do you like to travel what's your favorite part is it seeing amazing places eating great food well personally I'm a fan of all of it but I do have a not-so-secret favorite thing climbing into a perfectly made hotel bed after a long day the cool crisp sheets fluffy covers everything's so perfect and cozy and so I devoted my life to recreating this five at home okay maybe not my life but you guys it's surprisingly easy to turn your bed and so that inviting hotel bed of your dreams just know early checkout time now before we get to bed making let's talk thread count the secret to cozy bedding actually doesn't require a super high thread count I mean are there really a thousand threads per square inch in here when buying bedding instead focus on the quality of the cotton our preference is a hundred percent Egyptian or pima but most importantly it's what feels soft and comfortable to you now in order to replicate that amazing luxury hotel feeling in your very own bed you're going to need the following mattress pad with elastic edging fitted sheet flat sheet pillowcases a blanket light or heavy depending on your climate and season a quilt comforter or duvet to standard pillow shams two European pillow shams and accent pillows yeah those last couple are optional but I believe in all pillows okay now let's get started first lay down your mattress cover this not only protects your mattress it makes it a little more cozy we're all about the cozy here guys now most hotels actually use a flat sheet as the base layer but since most sets come with a fitted sheet that's what we're using make sure the corners are sitting completely in the sheet and tuck everything in tight what about ironing your sheets okay look if you want to iron your sheets I'm not gonna stop you I'm gonna judge you but just just a little bit to replicate that smooth crispness that ironing gives you dry your sheets to about 95% and then immediately put them on your bed just slightly damp they will be totally dry by bedtime and smooth as a baby's you know now add your top sheet lay it over the bed with the decorative trim at the top or any pattern facing down pull it all the way to the top of the mattress and make sure it's hanging evenly on all three sides the next layer is a thin quilt or blanket now this is a key component of most hotel bedding because it's super warm and incredibly cozy line the quilt up with your top sheet again making sure the overhang is even on all sides now fold your top sheet over your quilt so that we can see the pretty decorative part that's why we put it on facedown okay we've got our layers in place now it's time to get everything tucked in tight from one of the bottom corners of the mattress pull the layers tightly towards you and wrap the corners around the bed kind of like you're wrapping a gift once it's tight and smooth tuck it firmly under the bed guys we just made a hospital corner that's what a hospital corner is now just repeat that on the other side now it's time to grab your duvet if your duvet cover is a little wrinkled spray it with some plain water lay it on the bed so that all three sides are equal and folded in half this gives you the option of pulling it over you if you get chilly in the night or leave as is and just use your quit layer an optional but extra cozy option is to add a soft throw across the bottom of your bed and now for my personal favorite part the pillows there are a lot of different pillow configurations but here's my favorite start with the pillows and shams standard or European like I'm using here fluff them and stand them up tall against the frame now add pillows and standard shams if you want to use both this really gives your bed a luxurious look lastly your sleeping pillows and for an extra special touch add a decorative pillow who sure it was a couple of extra steps but you have to admit this is one tempting bed almost too pretty to mess up yeah Who am I kidding what household tasks would you like us to tackle next be sure to let us know in the comment section below and don't forget to Like and subscribe hey guys can I take a nap real quick come on guys just leave it for a little bit

I am shopping for new bedding so I was attracted to this video. I don't agree with all of the suggestions for making a bed. That's OK. I'm much more concerned about the performance of your on-camera talent. I've worked my whole life in a field where a woman has to work extra hard to be heard and taken seriously. It's time for women in the media to stop playing the cutie-pie. I hope that HGTV can shift away from asking women for this kind of performance. It would have been much better to have a knowledgeable person in the hotel or bedding industry speak on camera. If not, on-camera talent that you hire for your videos can speak into the camera without being overly-exuberant, without rolling their eyes, without over-smiling, and without jumping into a bed. Could a man have been hired to act this way in a video? Yes. But women are still not being compensated the same as men, and are not enjoying the same opportunities. Videos where women continue to play the cutie-pie do not help.

Why don't companies make the duvet part of the comforter and make everything machine washable?
Why is the pillow seperate from the case? I DON"T UNDERSTAND~!
I'd wash my comforter pillows and fitted sheets every weekend if that was the case… but it's A HUGE HASTLE to put on a duvet… and i do the sushi method.
Still such a pain in the buttttt.

6 pillows later and those weren't the pillows for sleeping?!

Jeff G · July 30, 2019 at 11:30 pm

Incredibly useless video. I thought it would show how to put a flat sheet on a bed without wrinkles. Silly me.

Thank you so much for demonstrating the hospital corners! I've always heard of them and read about them, but to see someone make them makes sense now!

heightsofsagarmatha · July 30, 2019 at 11:30 pm

I'd like to know how to incorporate principles of Feng Shui to promote more flow in my apartment. It may sound woo-woo but many successful people use Feng Shui – for example, casinos in Las Vegas use artificial waterfalls to promote a feeling of "flow" – they wouldn't spend tens of thousands of dollars on fountains if they didn't think it would help promote money flow. I'd be interested to know more about Feng Shui and how to incorporate its principles in my apartment.

I am always like that.

Thomas Lowdon · July 30, 2019 at 11:30 pm

The thread count of sheets is paramount to comfort feel…
Anything from 400 up is ok
700 luxury 1000 hard to find and pricey but the best. .
You see 200 budget count its like sack cloth…and she says thread counts not important as the feel.
The feel is the thread count DUH!!

Everybody sleeps differently as 1 size does not fit all when it comes to sleep. I always used down and feather but found them too HOT….. I started using the natural Australian Sheepskin Wool Duvet Comforter from a niche boutique brand Down Under Bedding and I'm not sweating all the time and sleeping better.
Check it out 💤💤💤

Hello. Princess · July 30, 2019 at 11:30 pm

Who the frick has time to do this every morning

Tammy Hughes · July 30, 2019 at 11:30 pm

You dont want a bed like hotels ive worked front desk for…

Oscar Morales · July 30, 2019 at 11:30 pm

Ok, there is so much unnecessary stuff on that bed. I work as a room service attendant for a hotel and one of my jobs is to load and unload carts of laundry off trucks that go to a warehouse where they professionally wash the sheets. At the hotel I work at, we only use a fitted sheet, bottom sheet, modern white comforter (which rarely gets washed), top sheet, decorative throw blanket (which also rarely gets washed) and 4 pillow covers (2 that are labeled firm and 2 that are labeled soft) that's it. Also, she did such a half assed job with those hospital corners.

R G · July 30, 2019 at 11:30 pm

I got lost at duvet, comforter and blanket. Which goes where, do we use all of them… Lol

Sam M · July 30, 2019 at 11:30 pm

I feel better knowing that a lot of people don’t know how to make a bed

Charlii C · July 30, 2019 at 11:30 pm

That is not a hospital corner

b u b l e h n o o d l e z · July 30, 2019 at 11:30 pm

bruh we're all just gonna throw most of the pillows on the floor when we go to sleep so what's the point of adding 10 different pillows

DK Creative · July 30, 2019 at 11:30 pm

This chicks excited about making a bed. Its really freaking me out.

JulieAnkha N. · July 30, 2019 at 11:30 pm

I used to think 6 pillows was too much. I bought extra pillows and they work great for watching tv. Next thing you know I now have 8!

rgirvine · July 30, 2019 at 11:30 pm

Ofcourse you iron a bottom sheet… Would you stay in a hotel who did not iron their sheels
