How Expensive is RIGA, LATVIA? This City is Amazing!

Published by Darron Toy on

[Applause] here we are in Riga in the old town a chilly November day the high for today is supposed to be 26 Fahrenheit that's like three or four below zero Celsius but doing okay so far I think there must be some fresh snow on the ground from last night and so that was of course the hostel that I'm staying out there where a bed in the dorm is just 8 euros that's about nine dollars and that includes a really good breakfast which I had yesterday the usual stuff like yogurt and cereal and hard-boiled eggs and juice and toast however I slept through breakfast this morning and so I'm going to a restaurant that I went to for dinner yesterday that service of breakfast all day and it has pretty good prices so in this video I'm going to explore around video and show how much things cost a market area here I'll walk through here and so they use the euro here in Latvia in all of the Baltic countries they use the euro they are part of the Schengen zone of Europe as far as entering with a passport you don't need a visa if you are from the US Canada or various other countries and as a general rule of thumb then in Europe when it comes to the prices of things then when you go north it gets more expensive and when you go south it gets less expensive and so as I'm going north here I was in Georgia not that long ago which is super cheap and then Ukraine which is also very cheap and then came to Lithuania and it is definitely more expensive than Ukraine and Georgia but going north up into Latvia here it seems to be more expensive than in this Iranian and so I think this is the yeah this is the restaurant lunch price from 275 euros so that's a good deal the menu is in Latvian they gave me an English one yesterday woods and get the idea for the pictures eggs and like sausage pancakes this one and this is like pancake and juice yep orange orange juice yes and so I got here two eggs and looks like sausages and means reading better can check this thing out it's six crepes with a raspberry sauce this is gonna be awesome and so here's the place it is the Tokyo City restaurant and it's actually a Japanese food restaurant but it has also local Lockean choices and so when I came here yesterday for dinner that I had something Latvian I forget what it was but that was like one of the best breakfasts that it had it was amazing the total price was 11 euros however it turned out the most expensive thing on the menu that I got there was the juice it was 5 euros for the orange juice the sausages and beans and eggs was just 3 euros and he crepe there was just 3 euros and so what about only 6 euros for an amazing and huge breakfast that I couldn't even finish but I ended up being 11 which is still a very good girl so a nice choice there and I'm now going to do some random exploring I have a few tips for places to check out I want to go see the river just get a view of the river here that flows from here into the Baltic Sea I think it's that way and then show some more of the old town and a couple other places so this is gonna be a fun whoa this vehicles the trickiest thing I've ever seen party bike first beer Mikan Rigga 12 euros for half an hour 22 euros for one hour half litre drink included and so I guess it's some old-timey vehicle that they transformed into this drinking thing so you sit there and oh I wonder if the people actually power it yeah so check it out there's pedals here and so maybe the people sitting here actually power the vehicle I guess it probably doesn't happen in beyond that party moviola check out some pastries and breads here Oh and so really here is the capital of Latvia and largest city of about 640 thousand people it is also the largest city and all of the Baltic countries which includes Latvia Lithuania and Estonia and in my last video then at the end of the video I took a bus from Vilnius Lithuania to here and so at the end of the video then I was here in Riga and it went to a restaurant Anne was talking to the young waitress there and wanted to get a idea of the difference between the languages of Lithuania and Latvia and Estonia and so I asked her like can you talk to people in Lithuania or is the language that distinct that you wouldn't be able to talk to them and your local languages and she said no it's totally different and sounds really weird to her she said that she has actually never been to it the way Nia even though it's only a couple of hours away to the border and there's no like passport control or anything you can just take a bus over there these countries are definitely very distinct different languages different cultures and traditions so alright looking for the Daugava River using the phone here it's close by but this is really a maze back in the old town here closed era ayala our sanella ayala obviously I Ella means street or lane or something all right getting closer I think a lot of really cool hole-in-the-wall places crog's and a taqueria taqueria el santo tacos and here it is the Daugava I'm sure I'm saying that wrong rivers alright gotta go and run for the walk signal [Applause] and so this flows into the Baltic Sea that way quite a sight snow on the ground I'm just bummed that I'm missing these snowstorms they keep happening at night apparently I'm ready to be hiking around in a big old snowstorm at some point here and so the Baltic Sea is very close to that way brigadiere is basically on the Baltic Sea and so that is why they are called the Baltic countries the Baltic Sea and so Sweden is to the west and Finland to the north Russia and Belarus to the east Lithuania to the south and I'm now going to find a place that was recommended by a viewer it is like a Art Nouveau part of town something like that could be something a little different or definitely a contrast to the old town Alice darah tava brewery stargher Road and so I wanted to mention stay tuned for later in the video I'm going to be meeting up with a local on why our viewers here and a friend of his and we're going to go to a latke in the pub and get Latvia food so should be cool I guess that must be the beer star ogród star Jerrod star gurad bezel amita a loose yep restaurant brewery and so we've got here a pakistani kebab place with some really cheap eating options so we got to whatever those are 250 euro stew them two burgers less than two euro for a burger a donor plate 350 euros less than 3 euros there 2 euros for three of these wraps and then vegetarian kebabs 2 euros fries a euro 21 85 for I guess onion rings falafel kebab 210 150 euros or Baba about 10 percent more expensive so just add a little bit on those our prices there I'm gonna take a wild guess about saying 5 percent off for students but I could be wrong so definitely some good deals there and I'm getting close to that to an area that was recommended it is down that Street right there and that is kind of more of a Art Deco looking kind of a building so get across the street here interesting clock here it has the day of the week looks like the day of the month it's a clock and a calendar loud and this is a art cafe mucks las cafes nikka art cafe and i guess this is a the guy was recommending good architecture the Art Nouveau style looks like all super gaudy and so notice that the Sun is already starting to go down it is 238 in the afternoon it's not even three o'clock yet and the Sun is already approaching the horizon that is Northern Europe closing in on the winner November twenty something today and so on now back in the area of the old town the hostel that I'm staying at is just like a block out that way a monument to somebody or something here and there's lots more to see of the old town but I can't show everything in this video so I'm going to go to a market that I went to yesterday that was kind of a local market and some interesting things to see there what a beautiful sight with this fresh snow and the trees and the old buildings definitely a really cool City the river is starting to freeze there I one twenty euro for a kg of apples 1 2004 kg of sunflower seeds super cheap 1 kg is 2.2 pounds cranberries just front my buttons to tellen capital of Estonia tomorrow for sixteen years fifty cents for a four and a half hour bus ride with e.coli and so this is the bus station I used Huck's Express when I came from Lithuania from Vilnius to Rigga here and I with equal lines just to compare but those seem to be the main two bus companies that go between the Baltic countries eco lines and Lux Express and it's like exactly the same price it was 16 euros coming from Vilnius so on to the next Baltic country tomorrow I and there goes the Sun right now going down at 342 in the afternoon and so I'm walking along here with mataf yeah and tell me how to say your name again three steps three steps yeah that's right so both from Latvia but different cities yeah yeah yep and we're going to find this bar pub restaurant kind of a thing the translation the flirting was just cave yeah okay okay cool and we got some Christmas light action going on here is it right on the street or yeah so you folk clubs but like I see so there will be some live music tonight you think maybe yeah I don't know but yeah it's like interesting music yeah and kind of let people capturing a lot to in cultures I got dog lover and then we he'll like some bands bands cool like more into rock or metal and they play like folk metal music and interesting kind of weird yeah use mixing the old and the new yeah yeah totally because I know like hard rock and metal music is is very popular in this part is the small over Scandinavia also and so it's basically a basement interesting variety of different types of music how do you say cheers in Latvian yeah yeah that's nice at first I thought it was brownies it looks like a chocolate thing but it's a car like yeah what's it called people local girls do yeah but I can't even try to say that Garnica time and so did we all at the same thing and so slug me and meatballs but but what is it called coke let that cop let them code code cylinder excellent that when I can get close to at least and with potatoes and like a big thing of sauerkraut and then some kind of a sauce under there yeah I don't know the prices I saw in the menu was like eight euros or something like that 750 yeah cool let's go for it yeah

The hostel I showed in the video is the Treehouse Hostel. I recommend reserving it online using this website: Or you can use that site to search for other hotels, apartments, hostels, etc.

I visited Latvia with my boyfriend last year, it definitely was my favorite Baltic country, the old town and the park are just beautiful, we also stayed in inčukalns, a little town near Sigulda where you can see how it's country life there,.. I look forward to come back to Latvia one day.

Cool review.
Latvia has lots of good cheap stuff, lots of expensive stuff. Imo the only thing why sometimes people are not that happy – local salaries are low thoug the opportunities, while scarce, are still there. so.. idk.. there's a transition between less skilled ussr generation and the newer one. Imo in 10-15 years riga is going to be much like any german, czech or finnish mid sized city.
imo Latvia has that great thing A LOT of non-riga cities actually offer very unique and highly polished quality of life/ services. It is as if the poor regions were "oh, yeah? well F you and your big city, riga! We are gonna make ours even better! "

He is so bad with languages… Jesus, just say it like how you read it.. nothing changes really only for (š ļ ķ ņ and others…)… and as a half Lithuanian and Latvian I can assure you we have similar traditions and language… but not so similar with Estonians 😉
