Cathay Pacific DOWNGRADE! Business in First Class | YourTravel.TV
Hi guys! We just landed in Jakarta from Bali. Welcome to a new flight report. Today we’re going to fly “Cathay Pacific” in first class. Well, first class would be nice. That’s what we booked at least, but we’ve been downgraded. Downgraded to… …business class. Sounds horrible I know! We wanted to show you the first class cabin though. Oh well! We’re going to show you the business class cabin instead. Let’s see how that goes. We arrived too early! As you know we landed from Bali… …and now we have a 4 hour layover, which we planned. ‘And why we are flying business class now?’ you may ask. Annoying! We booked the first class ticket with our “British Airways Avios” miles. First to Hong Kong, and from there to Beijing in “Cathay Dragon” first class. We got downgraded on both legs because there was an aircraft change and this new aircraft doesn’t have a first class cabin. That means unfortunately we have to sit “a little further back.” Concerning the “Avios” it’s not a problem. Of course we’ll be reimbursed for the difference between the first and business class cabins. It’s a shame though. I think they would have served caviar this time. Yes, it’s a day flight so they would have served caviar and also champagne, probably “Krug.” Only to show you and see if it is good of course! We’ll get another chance some day. These things happens if you fly a lot and you have to be ready for them. There’s no use in being upset about it. If there’s enough time beforehand maybe it can still be changed… Is it warm? Dominik:Yeah! …to a later flight for example. We can’t do that because we have other flight connections later on. Bad luck! Done! Check-in took a little longer today. We have good news though! Now I know why we’ve been “downgraded.” It’s going to be the original aircraft however, without a first class service. The seats are still in the first class cabin in the front so we can enjoy the great seat but no first class food and no champagne. Dominik: No first class champagne! Stefan: Oh well. Dominik: Only business class champagne…horrible! Stefan: My point was, no “Krug!” “Cathay Pacific” doesn’t have their own lounge in Jakarta. Passengers may use the “Saphire” lounges. There are two here. One is located near gate 8, which is the older one and a newer one near gate 5. Dominik: That one isn’t older, it’s just temporary. Stefan: Oh yeah right, temporary! They’re not equipped as well so don’t expect a high class lounge. That’s ok though. You can just go and sit, have a drink and then proceed to the gate. That’s what I meant. This lounge is a premium lounge. More modern than the other one. After all it’s not temporary, like the one near gate 8. I’d recommend using this one. Quick trip to the bar. We have about 30 minutes to cool down a little. It’s very warm here, we’re pretty sweaty. And then it’s off to the plane. There’s a live cooking station with three different meal options. They also serve spaghetti freshly made in the pan just like everything else, it’s made to order. Smells good here. I need to try something. This is the “business class” on “Cathay Pacific” on this flight to Hong Kong. It really is the first class cabin but it’s being used as business class with correlating service, yet in a first class seat. It’s reserved for passengers with the “Emerald status” from “Oneworld” alliance. If you reach that status, your chances in getting one of these seats are even higher. They’re assigned at check-in. There’s no possibility to book these seats in advance. Boarding was really fast this time I thought we were running late because we boarded 15 minutes after the official boarding time. Within 20 minutes… …in business class at least. It looks like economy class boarding is almost finished as well. Which means there’s going to be an on-time departure. During boarding we got a friendly greeting from the crew, got the champagne, and had a nice chat with the purser and other crew members. I felt very welcome on board. I think they felt a little sorry for us being downgraded from first to business class. They know about it as well of course but there’s nothing that can be done about it. At least we’re getting some “Avios” back and still have this great seat for the 4:30 hour flight to Hong Kong. Very nice! If you want to know how the first class experience is supposed to be on a shorter flight, you can watch our video from about 2 years ago where we flew “Cathay Pacific” first class with the proper service. We hoped to enjoy that today, but unfortunately it didn’t work out that way. Not a problem. These things happen. Cheers to a nice flight to Hong Kong! You might have noticed there are no overhead bins in the first class cabin but every seat has it’s own large storage compartment with enough space to fit a suitcase plus space for a jacket. I noticed the so called “unblock” just happened. Do you know what that means? I recently just learned about it. They take away those little bricks/blocks from the wheels which keep them from rolling. This is considered the official departure of the flight by the way. Interesting and important when it comes to delays. Oh I have to switch on the camera! There is so much space I don’t even know where to start! On the right side there’s an armrest to make it even more comfortable. Here we have a few seat controls to convert the seat into a lie flat bed, same on the left side. This is the tray table which I’ll show you later Power and USB sockets. A few storage compartments for the phone for example. This is the controller for the inflight entertainment. The screen just slides out like this. Wow! The menu and the movies are available in German. On the controller I have a little screen. You can definitely get comfortable in this seat. It is very long. I’ll show you the measurements in a moment. It converts into a flat bed. I won’t need that though on this short flight. We’re departing in the afternoon and arriving in Hong Kong in the evening. I’m especially looking forward to the first class lounge there. We’re entitled to use it thanks to our status. We are in the highest tier at “British Airways” which gives us the “Oneworld Emerald” status. This gives us access the ‘alliance member’ services such as the first class lounge of “Cathay Pacific” called, “The Pier.” I’m sure you’ve heard about that a few times on our channel before. It’s one of the best first class lounges on the market. Of course some say the “Lufthansa First Class Terminal” is better. I agree to a certain degree. It’s pretty different though and on another level. By the way, a while ago we flew “La Premiere” I can tell you! Great lounge and a great first class cabin. In my opinion one of the best on the market. You can watch that video. Just click up there! The service is impeccable. Very friendly crew. Both the purser and the flight attendant assigned to me are from Taipei, Taiwan. They really seem to like us. We’ve been on board a few times before and we told them about it. They told us the airline has an another caterer in addition to the main one, which means I can choose another dish which isn’t on the menu. The question is, ‘is it really better?’ She said probably yes. I’ll do that then. The champagne on board is “Piper Heidsieck,” the regular brut. I’ll show you the price of that one in a banner down below here. It’s a more ‘basic’ champagne, but I like it. In first class they would have served “Krug” champagne. One bottle costs at least €300. If you’re lucky you can get a bargain for €250 or €260. That’s pretty expensive. I can watch my selection of movies or shows on the screen and the flight map on the handheld. As I mentioned before, this is a 4:30 hour flight to Hong Kong. Here’s a cool feature, there are cameras on board. You can watch them on the little screen. Right now I can only see clouds and the sky. At takeoff, you can see the front wheels. That was a cool view. The picture quality isn’t the greatest though. If they’re are going to place cameras on the A350, the picture will have a higher resolution. This aircraft is a little older, so the equipment is not up to date. There’s an extensive selection of movies. Current blockbusters and quite a few, about 60%, in German. We always inform you if there are German dubbed movies. That’s because many ask us about it. We can watch movies in English with German subtitles of course. That isn’t available on every airline though. Just so you know. The seatbelt signs haven’t been switched off and we can’t stand up yet, but the service has begun. They bring over water, champagne, and nuts pretty quickly. Almonds and cashew nuts. That’s it. They taste a little like bacon. You just saw how to open the tray table. It slides back and forth. I’ll keep it in the middle. Let’s see if I can also slide the seat forward. The seat doesn’t slide forward but I can pull the tray table towards me. This is the appetizer. The dessert is already on the tray. Some fruit. This is the appetizer I got. 3 shrimp a small salad with mango and…it’s not on the menu! Looks kind of like a sausage. Dominik: I did’t get anything yet. Stefan: You weren’t in your seat. We’re going to eat together like “Bert & Ernie.” Dominik called it ‘business in first’ before. At “Qatar Airways” we called it ‘first in business.’ So and here we have it, I think I’m going to shut the blinds. It’s too bright, the appetizer. I feel very comfortable here. There’s so much space. Never experienced this in ‘business class.’ Incredible! At least 5 people are working in the front cabin in ‘first class.’ I wonder why? When there are only 6 seats. We’re on the left side, the seats to our right are separated by a divider. It’s perfect in this case because there’s a family with two children sitting over there. I think there are way too many crew members up here, but I’m not complaining. This is the main course. Beef with rice and vegetables. She said it’s pretty hot. Looks a little strange though; doesn’t mean it tastes bad. I have to check the menu. The cabin manager recommended the red wine. But my French isn’t good enough to pronounce the name. You’ll have to look at the menu which you can see on the right. Sorry but I can’t pronounce it. The presentation of the food isn’t that nice but it tastes excellent! Very well seasoned. Typical Asian style food with some spices we don’t have in Europe. Very aromatic, I like it. And that’s it for the meal. Let’s check out the lavatory Of course not standing up! Men also can sit down to pee. In my house that was normal though when I was a child. That’s not what we’re talking about here. We’re talking about the lavatory in the 777 of “Cathay Pacific.” How can I put it? Do you know the saying “first in business?” This is the other way around, “business in first.” We are in first class but officially we’re flying business class. What’s in here? Nice wooden paneling. How does it open? Never mind. Soap, facial mist to refresh and moisturize the face and hand and body lotion. The sink looks nice. Whoops! The seatbelt signs are on after all. This is the lavatory of the “Cathay Pacific First Class.” I’m pretty stuffed. It was actually a pretty good deal. I was a little disappointed when I heard about the downgrade. “Oh no! No first class aboard!” But when I think about the fact, that for the price of a regular business class ticket, paid with “Avios”, the “British Airways” mileage program, I get to be in a separate first class cabin. Nobody’s walking through here. There are crew members just for us here. It still feels a bit like first class. Apart from the food. They might not be serving first class champagne or wine or food, but I’m not bothered at all. I still feel the experience. It’s great. I think we got lucky this time. The dessert looks very enticing. Let’s see what it is. Something pink. Loaded with calories I’m sure. But I have to try it. It’s really just sweet. I was wondering where the headphones were the entire time. I looked around everywhere in every compartment. The flight attendant just forgot to bring them over after boarding. Didn’t matter then because I didn’t need them before, but now I do. They’re from “Bose.” This little sign means they were recently cleaned. They look very clean. Nice I could use my own but this time I don’t think I need to. I’ll watch some movies. I think I like these headphones. The cheese plate. It has three different kinds. As usual a light one, a brie and some blue cheese, a stronger one. Accompanied by some fruit and crackers What are you doing here now? I lost so much weight in training camp. I’m very proud of myself! This looks a little gay now. 3 kilos! And… I skipped the cheese. I’m going to join you now. You can sit comfortably next to each other here. Stefan: It’s the cheese. Dominik: Oh ok! I thought it was your feet! Ah no you’re still wearing shoes! Talking about shoes. I don’t have any slippers! Have you seen slippers? Dominik: No Now everyone will ask again: ‘Are you a couple or just friends?’ We have e FAQ video from 2018 where we answered all these questions. The link is in the description below. Plus there’s an FAQ playlist with many questions from you. There you find all the answers. Stefan: I didn’t try that yet. You’re eating all of my cheese. You can have that one. Dominik: Ok I’m leaving now. Stefan: Ok bye! Don’t you have your own water? He didn’t see the apricot. We’re really being spoiled here. I just got a fruit plate. And a capuccino with sweetener. It’s becoming a little bumpy now. We have some turbulence. But not during the meal service. What a miracle! So this is the end of this day-flight. I guess they’re going to darken the cabin anyway. I wanted to show you the seat real quick. Of course it converts into a bed. It is a first class seat after all. It’s also very wide. Not only do I have the seat, but also this extension. I can also pull down the armrest but I won’t do that. What I want to show you is how this seat converts into a bed. On the left there’s a button for that. I just need to hold it. The footrest comes out first. Or I can use the buttons on the right. Might be easier. This is the converted seat. It’s very wide. At least 2 meters long. Probably even longer. Very soft! But don’t forget this is a first class seat. In the business cabin, it looks different. There they have a reverse herringbone seat configuration You know that one. 1-2-1 layout and the window seats are laid out towards the window. Hence the word reverse herringbone because it looks just like that. It’s different in first class. Here they offer a 1-1-1- configuration. I could sleep very well here. I won’t do that though. We still have about 3/3.5 hours to go to Hong Kong. I’ll watch a movie, finish my coffee and just relax. I’ll probably see you for the landing or maybe earlier, just in case there’s something we forgot to mention or didn’t know about. Like a snack bar in the galley or maybe I can order something else. There’s always something. So far I really like “Cathay Pacific.” What I’m missing is the button for the lounge position for the seat. Like on a sofa or an armchair. I guess this is it. There’s no separate setting for it though. Well, my conclusion and opinion about the “Cathay Pacific” “business in first class.” The seat is phenomenal. The crew is very friendly. The food was of course a business class meal. It was very tasty. The beef was… …a little much for me. But that’s very subjective of course. Now after landing in Hong Kong we’ll go to the first class lounge. I really liked it, the downgrade. Of course a real first class service would have been nice but that’s life sometimes. I am very satisfied. Back to Stefan! On the opposite side is the smaller lavatory and here is the bigger one. It’s one of the highlights up here. You know how much I like the lavatory scenes. It’s part of our reviews now. If I skip one there’s always a complaint in the comment section. But that’s what it’s there for. You can ask us questions, give us feedback or notes for future videos. Just get in there and comment! One push of a button. Runs for quite a while actually. Different amenities are here. Soaps, lotions and… …the facial mist. Feels nice. As you know… …the air in a plane is extremely dry. Especially in the 777. It’s an older model where they don’t increase humidity like in the “Dreamliner” or the A350. That’s why it’s important to moisturize your skin by using the mist, lotion and of course drinking a lot of water. Back to my seat. We arrived in Hong Kong. Unfortunately it’s dark outside. In conclusion, I really enjoyed the flight even though it all started a little strange because of the downgrade. We had great service on board though. The ladies were very attentive. The food was good. Regular business class meals. The seat was obviously the highlight. A first class seat after all. As Dominik mentioned before. You can’t expect more. After all we only paid for business class with “Avios”. If you want to know how it works with “Avios” or status miles in general, check our website. There we have travel hacks for you and there we also explain in videos how all of it works. Earning points with credit cards, magazine subscriptions, “Payback” points, car rentals, and many more. You can use them to book premium award tickets. It really makes a big difference. You can make your dreams come true that way. Those flights aren’t always as expensive as they seem. Thank you for watching! See you in the next video. We’re going to “The Pier” now. For us, it’s the best first class lounge in Asia. See you! Bye!!
