1st Tesla Model 3 Road Trip!! – Where's the Juice?

Published by Darron Toy on

so we've had our Tesla Model 3 for about two months it's working great driving around town but now it's time to take a long road trip to visit family for Christmas we've charged it all the way up but will it make it two hundred and twenty two miles through the Catskill Mountains [Applause] [Applause] so far so good no traffic almost a clear skies I just looked at the speedometer and said 80 oops gotta get used to it it's gonna take us about five hours with our stuff 220 miles I'm going to turn on auto steering the working take your hands up say and here it is scared to take me farther away it's working but it's to keep it lands on the wheel okay we're about 20 minutes in and we've lost we were at 276 just started out at about 300 when we left it was 306 we charged it then we packed a car we lost six miles we left the heat out while we were packing the car you got to learn new things or you have a new car we always stop at the world-famous Roscoe diner in Roscoe New York recently we discovered they were installing Tesla superchargers right in the parking lot but are they working yet we're gonna Roscoe we're gonna see if the Tesla charging station is operational we know it's there because we see it on the webcam but we don't know if it works or not saw some workers they're like two days ago yesterday were there people there yesterday oh boy I'm so excited it might be working but maybe not if not we'll have to get juice someplace else alright so that was exit 112 so we got to go to the eggs at 94 that's where Roscoe is great you know how I remember it's 94 exit 94 there's a tacky feeling because that's where the Millennium Falcon is in Star Wars thank you very 1996 [Applause] we'll back up into one of the spots and see if we can charge what do you think all right let's see oh geez it's really short the necklace you didn't park in the right spot [Applause] no deuce nothing it's blue no charge no car okay that's it no power left away to Binghamton boy look how crispy your fries are goodbye Roscoe diner going to the Binghamton supercharger 53 miles away we're still doing good though we got 160 miles left on the car if we get the stop we'd have 11 miles left yeah we could we could get up go all the way but we're gonna stop anyway okay right here turn in here turn right in there go around the back better another diner see you missed it keep going keep going around the back and work to the right look there's another model three at the camera I tried it trying to follow the lines is even the line show up the lines are pointing to where you're going yeah exactly you're going that's right turn left turn left turn left okay now straight we made it we found it it was right where it said it was gonna be at another diner what does it call the spot diner when it's flashing like that that means it's working right no when it's green when it's green and slashing right now it's green and flashing before it was flashing blue so far it's a dollar ninety two yeah yeah see how fast I keeps going on one yeah we were down to like eighty something we've only been here for like a few minutes it's not real fast it's done charging we're all set okay got up to 220 miles so we might have made it all the way but we decided to stop anyway just to make sure right yes and we got a cookie too everything there black eyes are looking right at it it turned black [Applause] so we made it we had a great time with family then we charged the car back up to 100% and headed back so we're gonna stop back at Binghamton again to charge up again because the charges at Roscoe we know aren't working now and we checked and there really isn't anything between Roscoe and our house so we're going to charge up at Binghamton but you're really not supposed to do that you're supposed to charge it you're supposed to drive it down a little bit and then charge it up but we're gonna see how long it takes Oh let's get at least 50 miles we'll just charge it for as long as we want and we'll leave right yeah I guess it's not charging that fast it's not gonna charge that fast because we got almost a full charge we can get to 90 ever closer to it that would be better well the thing is it's gonna take forever don't you think we should just wait here like 20 minutes and then go do no matter what it is I was hoping to get to 280 well it's gonna be slow charging the top of the battery [Applause] okay I'm driving now here we go you ready ready under Rosco I forgot how to do the thing put your foot on the brake before the break down down down his Drive okay down his drive and then we just go right Tomic batter's power you supposed to say turbines to speed Jeremias just be all right let's hit the cruise control I'm gonna set it to how do I do it push this button here now know what you have to actually start the cruiser start at first to change the numbers okay so I'll go buh buh like that now you're both owners oh yes that's what I want and it's going to 65 let me try putting it up to 70 seventy okay that's five miles an hour above the speed limit now if I go like this it'll pass this car or not make sure you hold it down you gotta bolt it down all the way like that there you go it's doing it that's good it's working it works whoa how varrick figured out that our pilot look it's doing it by itself it's like magic you're brave brave you wouldn't do that I keep I keep both hands on the wheel anyway confidence in it I can always stop it do whatever I want just as long as you're paying attention that's what I think is the problem with people people will stop paying attention to what's happening that's the danger next up Roscoe in the future next time we'll be tesla stations there we'll just go right there it'll be great there's some work happening here work happening if that Roscoe diner they were doing some work here we talked to a guy and what what did the guy say well he said that they were probably gonna get the nice Sanka or the New York State electric and gas company we'll turn them on in about a month's time so they're not ready until then so yeah so sometime in January hopefully by the end of January these are beyond we'll be able to charge here that'll be in January 2019 that was it under the trip under the trip we went the whole way and didn't charge we would have had four miles four miles left four miles left cut it close that would have cut it close but we still could have made it

The colder it is, the longer the charge time.

David McGinty · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

Great presentation of real life (except for the winter weather) Judy and I will make our first tirp in our Model 3 the end of May for 10 days. We are also a bit about the the distances and the auto pilot. But with time? Thank you

States are starting to tax EV's 1000$ a year to help with Road Works…. Because gas taxes are used to support highway construction and maintenance. No free lunch owning an EV.

Billblom · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

Wait for NY to discover that they can tax a tesla by the mile.. watch for a $1 a mile to make your travels nice and friendly…to the state.

Noway Müller · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

use the metric system!

Stanley Rusin · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

Hey!!! You live near where I live!! Can I contact you about questions with the model 3 while living in upstate NY? I'm looking to buy one in the future!!

David Oickle · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

I wish I could afford one of this, is a nice car in every reason

Paul Smith · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

I understand that running the air conditioner and/or heater will reduce the mileage significantly. Is this true?

According to a BBC report that I watched, extreme cold weather and/or hot weather will impact significantly the range of an EV? What percentage of the range is likely to be lost to extreme weather?

Once or twice a year I drive from my home in central Texas to Fort Myers, FL. On several occasions I have gotten stuck in horrific traffic jams that were the result of a major road accident. I never allow the fuel level in my gasoline fueled car to get below 1/4 of a tank to handle contingencies. What would be the safety margin for an EV?

How much energy would an EV go through if stuck in traffic because of a major accident?

I was wondering how long it takes to change it up.

David Wright · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

Great Road Trip Video. Greeting from Germany

Ron Arnott · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

the music is ok for a little while. Sounds more like marching forward with a solid resolve to do something

yamada koji · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

4:15 Why was it not possible to charge at this place?
 Is the charger broken?

Ricky Dunn · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

Hate the music!!

Lars NL · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

Awesome music 😁

JaRHead600RR · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

Any reason why you couldn't make it on one charge since its 220 miles to the dest. What could you have done differently?

Clayton D'Cruz · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

excellent video, really enjoyed it!

Timothy Hughbanks · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

CAT is right about the music – it sucks. It was fun to see regular newbies learning how the long road trip goes – nice job.

Autogizmo · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

Don't like the music. It's annoying

Heavens to Murgatroyd · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

Unfortunately the premium price you paid for the car and figuring in the depreciation you will never see any saving over a gasoline car unless you drive this for 20 years. Repair parts are expensive and unavailable. Plus you will never be able to take spontaneous drives to exciting destinations. As for its green-ness you've just moved the pollution to areas uneffected by fossil fuels. Other than that great idea……

Aldrin Manyando · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am

The man cant drive…😙😅😅

Rudranauth. Persaud · May 16, 2019 at 7:57 am
